It was fairly busy weekend at the box office, with four new wide releases. However, only two films, Sam Raimi's darkly comic survival horror "Send Help" and the horror video game adaptation "Iron Lung" towered above the competition, with the former taking the top spot in a tight race. Meanwhile, the political documentary "Melania" scored a modest debut compared to its costs, and the Jason Statham action thriller "Shelter" downright tanked.

Sam Raimi's "Send Help" opened in first place with $19.1 million from 3,475 theaters. This is the filmmaker's seventh #1 debut. His last horror film, "Drag Me to Hell" opened with $15.8 million in 2009, which adjusted for inflation would be around $23.8 million in 2026. Overseas, the film added another $8 million for a worldwide total of $27.1 million. The film's budget is estimated at around $40 million, which means it would need to gross around $80 million to turn a profit. "Send Help" received rave reviews from critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a mixed-to-positive reception from moviegoers ("B+" CinemaScore).
The indie horror "Iron Lung" became a sensational success story despite the fact that it couldn't secure the top spot. Written and directed by YouTuber Mark Fischbach aka Markiplier based on the short horror video game of the same name, the film opened with $17.8 million from 3,015 theaters against a $3 million production budget. It also raked in another $3 million internationally for a $20.8 million worldwide debut. Critics didn't think much of it (44% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences definitely enjoyed it considering its 89% Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter. The film does not have a CinemaScore poll, because analysts did not expect it to do so well.
Brett Ratner's documentary "Melania" finished in third place with $7.1 million from 1,778 theaters. Considering the total number of screens, the film performed better than expected, however, with a budget of $40 million, and at least another $30-35 million spent of marketing, the film would need around $80 million to turn a profit. The biggest opening weekend for a documentary belongs to Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" with $23.9 million in 2004, which adjusted for inflation is around $41 million today. That film went on to gross a total of $119.1 million ($204.3 million in 2026) in North America and $103.2 million ($177 million in 2026) from foreign markets, which is a total of $222.4 million (381.6 million in 2026) worldwide. "Melania" received a very negative reception from critics (6% on Rotten Tomatoes), who mostly dismissed it as a glossy reality TV-style propaganda piece, but the moviegoers who did watch it generally liked it ("A" CinemaScore).
The animated sequel "Zootopia 2" finished in fourth place with $5.9 million, a surprising uptick of 10% compared to the previous week, despite losing 54 theaters. The film is still ahead of "Avatar: Fire and Ash" with a domestic total of $409 million domestically and $1.36 billion overseas. That's a worldwide total of $1.77 billion.
The Top 5 is rounded out by James Cameron's "Avatar: Fire and Ash" with $5.6 million, down 11.8% from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $386.2 million in North America, and another $1 billion from overseas markets, for a global total of $1.41 billion.
And the last of the new wide releases, the action thriller "Shelter" starring Jason Statham, crashed and burned in sixth place with $5.5 million from 2,726 theaters. Internationally it adds another $7.6 million for a global tally of $13.2 million against a $50 million budget.
