As expected, the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" exploded with a record-breaking debut that made up two-thirds of the entire weekend box office. Meanwhile, "Super Mario Galaxy" and "Project Hail Mary" are still holding strong, while smaller, semi-wide new releases like "Over Your Dead Body", "Fuze" and "Desert Warrior" struggled to find their audience.

"Michael" opened at the top of the box office with $97.2 million from 3,955 theaters, which is the biggest opening for any kind of biographical movie. The previous record holder was "Oppenheimer" with $82.4 million. The film also grossed another $121.6 million from overseas markets, which brings the film's worldwide debut to a total of $218.8 million. The film's production budget is estimated at around $200 million, which means it would need to cross the $400 million mark to turn a profit. I don't expect it to be a problem. The critical reception was mostly negative (38% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers enjoyed the film ("A-" CinemaScore).
"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" lost the #1 position in its fourth weekend, finishing in second place with $20.5 million, which is a 43.6% drop. The film has now grossed a total of $$385.8 million in North America, and another $445.8 million from foreign markets, which brings its global cume to $831.6 million against a $110 million budget. Hopes are high that the film will soon become the first billion dollar movie of 2026.
"Project Hail Mary" fell from second place to third place and grossed $12.8 million in its sixth weekend. That's a soft 37.4% drop from last week. The film's domestic tally has reached $305 million, while overseas it raked in a total of $308 million for a worldwide total of $613 million. Production costs were high at $200-$250 million, but even with marketing costs, the film is starting to turn in a profit.
Last week's new horror film, "Lee Cronin's The Mummy" finished its second weekend in fourth place with $5.5 million, down a steep 59.3%. The film's domestic box-office has crawled to a total of $23.3 million, but overseas it's doing much better, having grossed $42 million. The global tally is now at $65.3 million against a $22 million budget, making it yet another Blumhouse hit.
The Top 5 is rounded out by A24's "The Drama" with $2.6 million in its fourth weekend. The film dropped 45.7% from the previous frame, but it's already a sleeper hit, grossing $44.8 million domestically and another $59.2 million from overseas markets, which adds up to a worldwide total of $104 million against a $28 million production budget.
The newly released dark comedy thriller "Over Your Dead Body" opened in eighth place with only $1.3 million from 1,550 theaters.
In other news, A24's psychological thriller "Mother Mary" starring Anne Hathawy, expanded nationwide into a total of 1,103 theaters and broke into the Top 10 at #9 with $1.2 million. It's domestic total is now at $1.4 million. The film cost $20 million to produce. Also, the concert film "American Youngboy" opened in tenth place with $1.1 million from 583 theaters.
Other releases that didn't make the Top 10 are "Fuze", which grossed $1 million from 1,164 theaters, and "Desert Warrior", which raked in $487,848 from 1,010 theaters. The BAFTA-winning biopic "I Swear" was released in US theaters and grossed $666,402 from 645 screens.
