Product Description: Before her steamy breakthrough hit took over the world, Tyla’s life was normal. “I remember just being in South Africa, simple life, no drama, nothing,” the 24-year-old singer tells Apple Music. Then came “Water,” her 2023 single that blew up on TikTok, charted worldwide, and earned her the first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, edging out established stars like Davido and Burna Boy. Suddenly, the newcomer was thrust on the world stage—a challenge she accepted. “When I came in, I feel like I was very green, and I had a very innocent idea of the world and the industry. I thought it was all rainbows, and yay, I get to sing!” Tyla admits. “And it is that—but also, you have to be strong-minded in order to stay yourself in all of this.”
Three years after her big break—and two years after her self-titled debut album that expanded upon the blend of amapiano, pop, and R&B from “Water”—Tyla is more confident than she’s ever been, having toured the world, played Coachella, and performed alongside Future at the World Cup opening ceremony. With her second album, A*POP, the budding global superstar firmly plants her flag, defining herself as an African musician first and foremost. “A*POP is literally me trying to extend the idea of what an African pop star looks like, what an African pop star sounds like,” she explains. “I think that, sometimes, when you’re from somewhere, you’re expected to look a way or sound a way.” She recalls seeing comments along the lines of, “Tyla’s not African enough.” “And I’m like, ‘What is African enough?’”
On A*POP, Tyla builds upon her debut album’s foundation with her breathy vocals and playful sensuality. But where its predecessor stretched out worldwide, here the singer reps her homeland, collaborating with South African artists almost exclusively. (Zara Larsson, with whom Tyla previously collaborated on Midnight Sun: Girls Trip, is the exception on the Britney Spears-referencing “SHE DID IT AGAIN.”) She lands her next hit with the hypnotic “CHANEL,” begs a lover to come closer on the Rihanna-esque “THAT GIRL,” and reimagines a 2009 anthem from legendary South African house duo Liquideep on the strobing “FAIRYTALE.”
