Product Description: Their first album in a decade was “freeing and enjoyable” to create, says Dougy Mandagi.

“This record is kind of like the first record, where we had the least amount of external opinions and external expectations,” The Temper Trap singer/guitarist Dougy Mandagi tells Apple Music. “So it was a very freeing and enjoyable process.”

Mandagi says the pressure to replicate the commercial success of the band’s 2009 debut, Conditions, resonated all the way through to the making of their third full-length, 2016’s Thick as Thieves. The solution? Leave it for a decade. “I think we just needed 10 years between albums for people to lay off and let us do what we want to do,” laughs the singer.

While Sungazer doesn’t abandon the soaring indie rock on which The Temper Trap made their name, it does find the Melbourne quartet stretching their collective musical legs, incorporating abrasive guitars and distorted drums on opener “Lucky Dimes,” dirty, driving bass on “Dystopia Radio,” and even space rock on atmospheric closer “Kuru.” Here, Mandagi talks Apple Music through Sungazer, track by track.
