Product Description: It isn’t easy to sum up the 60-plus-year career of the Japanese artist Haruomi Hosono, but in some ways Yours Sincerely does it in about half an hour. It’s all there: cute, deadpan covers of old American doo-wop (The Moonglows’ “Sincerely”) and eerie rituals from imaginary countries (“M for Mandala”), fragments of electronic elevator music (“Anemo Wheel”) and dreamlike quotations from Lizst (“Humming ‘Dream of Love’”) and Beethoven (“Figlio Perduto”).

Most of all, the album captures Hosono’s singular demeanor, which is at once childlike and stoic, always smiling but never laughing. The impression, given his age, is of someone searching for the essence, trying to boil down his work to the most basic and yet most enigmatic version of itself.

One of the most prolific and influential musicians in Japanese pop, Hosono has more recently become a touchpoint for everyone from Vampire Weekend and Mac DeMarco and Harry Styles, who named Harry’s House after Hosono’s 1973 album Hosono House.
