The new Disney/Marvel release "Captain Marvel" gave the box-office a much needed boost this weekend, both domestically and internationally. The 21st installment in the MCU dominated the weekend with a massive three-day performance that is now Marvel's seventh largest opening weekend of all time.

Although it made a decent amount of money in its opening weekend and even outperformed expectations, the ninth and thankfully last installment in Tyler Perry's Madea franchise failed to secure the top position at the box-office as DreamWorks Animation's threequel "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" managed to maintain its dominance. Meanwhile, the new release "Greta" was a bit of a disaster.

The holiday weekend at the box-office has been slow. In fact, it has been the worst since 2004. The leader of the pack was Fox's "Alita: Battle Angel", and the satirical romantic comedy "Isn't It Romantic" also performed well. The Blumhouse sequel "Happy Death Day 2U", however, fell short of expectations.

"Alita: Battle Angel" is a sci-fi action film directed by Robert Rodriguez ("Sin City") based on the manga series "Gunnm" by Yukito Kishiro. The film is produced and co-written by James Cameron ("Avatar").

The story is set in the year 2563 and it follows Alita (Rosa Salazar), a deactivated female cyborg who is brought back to life by a compassionate doctor (Christoph Waltz), but has no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize. When deadly and corrupt forces come for her, she discovers her unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. Keean Johnson, Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, Eiza Gonzalez and Lana Condor co-star.

"Alita: Battle Angel" opened in theaters on February 14, 2019 and received mixed reviews from critics.

The cyberpunk action film "Alita: Battle Angel" has arrived in theaters. The film is directed by Robert Rodriguez ("Sin City") with "Avatar" filmmaker James Cameron serving as co-writer and producer. The Blumhouse sequel "Happy Death Day 2U" starring Jessica Rothe and the satirical romcom "Isn't It Romantic" starring Rebel Wilson have also been released this week.

In limited release it might be worth checking out the biopic "Fighting with My Family" that tells the story of WWE professional wrestler Paige, and it stars Florence Pugh, Lena Headey, Nick Frost and Vince Vaughn. Dwayne Johnson makes an appearence as himself, and he also executive produced the film.

  • The ten-episode superhero series "The Umbrella Academy" based on the Dark Horse comic book series created by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Ba. The series stars Ellen Page, Mary J. Blige, Colm Feore, Tom Hopper and Cameron Britton.
  • The frat-house thriller "Pledge" that received a warm reception at this year's Fantasia Film Festival.
