DVD & Blu-ray: Ang Lee's PUSHING HANDS / TUI SHOU (1991)

Product Description: Having just moved from Beijing, elderly tai chi master Mr. Chu (Sihung Lung) struggles to adjust to life in New York, living with his Americanized son Alex (Ye-tong Wang). Chu immediately butts heads with his put-upon white daughter-in-law, Martha (Deb Snyder), a writer who seems to blame him for her own paralyzing inability to focus. But when Chu begins teaching tai chi at a local school, his desire to make a meaningful connection comes to fruition in the most unexpected of ways. PUSHING HANDS is the debut film from Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, forming the first chapter in his "Father Knows Best" trilogy, which depicts the tensions between the traditional Confucian values of the older generation and the realities of modern life. Presented in a new 2K restoration. After winning the Academy Award for Best Director with "Life of Pi" in 2013, Ang Lee returns with the war drama "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk".

Based on the novel written by Ben Fountain, the film tells the story of 19-year-old Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn), who is brought home after a harrowing Iraq battle and celebrated alongside his squadmates as heroes during the halftime show of a Thanksgiving Day football game. In the meantime, flashbacks reveal what really happened to his squad, contrasting the realities of the war with America's perceptions. Vin Diesel, Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund and Steve Martin co-star.

Lee promises a ground-breaking experience as the film is shot at 120 frames per second in 4K native 3D that will offer moviegoers an unprecedented experience in terms of realism and visual detail. Even from the brief snippets of footage from the trailer, it looks visually stunning. Here's what Kristen Stewart had to say about Lee's ground-breaking technique:
"An insanely high frame rate would give you like a slow motion effect, but if you put it in real time you’re just getting more information than we’re used to. But usually if you do that without whatever process he’s doing—which I have no idea—it makes it look like reality TV, it makes it crisp in a way that actually detaches you. [But] he messes with depth of field and makes this 3D situation where—usually the way a lens works, you control where the focal point is, [but] in this case everything’s in focus… So when you watch the movie you can decide, almost as if you’re there in person, what you want to look at, which has just never been seen before on film."
"Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" opens in theaters on November 11th.

Vin Diesel joins the cast of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
Chris Tucker joins the cast of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
Ang Lee's Iraq War satire "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" continues to round up a very interesting cast. After last week we got news that Kristen Stewart had been cast, we now have an announcement that Vin Diesel and Chris Tucker have just joined the project. The film is based on the novel by Ben Fountain which focuses on the members of a squad, who after surviving a horrible firefight in Iraq, become involved in an absurd media circus which involves a "Victory Tour" at Texas Stadium. The story takes place over the course of a single day with flashbacks providing further narrative detail. The ensemble, so far, also includes Garrett Hedlund and Steve Martin. "Slumdog Millionaire" scribe Simon Beaufoy will pen the adaptation. The film will be shot in Ultra High Frame Rate 3D, which is curious for this kind of movie, but it also could be a sign that the "Life of Pi" director is preparing something special.

Kristen Stewart in talks to join Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
Kristen Stewart is in negotiations to join the cast of Ang Lee's upcoming Iraq War satire "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk". The film is based on Ben Fountain's novel of the same name and it revolves around 19-year-old infantryman Billy Lynn (newcomer Joe Alwyn) and his fellow squad members who become involved in a propagandistic media circus after surviving a firefight in Iraq. The Bush administration brings the veterans home for a victory lap that leads them to the Dallas Cowboys' football stadium where they're honored during the team's Thanksgiving halftime show before they return to war in Iraq.

Stewart will be playing the role of Kathryn, Billy's older sister. The cast also features Steve Martin and Garrett Hedlund. The screenplay has been written by Academy Award winner Simon Beaufoy ("Slumdog MIllionaire"). Production is scheduled to begin this month.

Argo Wins Oscar for Best Picture

The Oscar winners have been announced in what is probably considered one of the weakest shows in the Academy's history. But who really cares that Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane was more miss than hit as the show's host and that his attempts at humor were somewhat tasteless when not downright dull ? The important thing is that the participating movies were some of the most interesting and relevant of not only 2012, but also recent years.

Life of Pi Wins 4 OscarsThe Academy must have had a very hard time choosing winners, so the awards were pretty much evenly split among each of the major films. "Argo" took home 3 awards for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Editing, but it was "Life of Pi" who scored the most wins with 4 trophies for Best Director (Ang Lee), Cinematography, Original Score and Visual Effects.

"Les Miserables" won 3 Oscars for Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway), Sound Mixing and Makeup. "Django Unchained" earned 2 trophies for Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz) and Original Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino) and Spielberg's "Lincoln" also took home 2 awards for Best Leading Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Production Design. Among the movies rewarded with just one award: "Silver Linings Playbook" - Best Leading Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), "Amour" - Best Foreign Film, "Zero Dark Thirty" - Best Sound Editing and "Anna Karenina" - Best Costume Design. "Skyfall" won the expected award for Best Original Song (wonderfully performed live by Adele) and one for Sound Editing through a very rare case of a voting tie with "Zero Dark Thirty". Pixar's Brave also won Best Animated Feature, despite having some stiff competition for the first time in years.

As you can see, most of the major films of the year received due honors from the Academy, minus "Beasts of the Southern Wild", "The Master", "Flight" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", all of which received none, despite having several nominations, which in itself is still great honor.

Check out the full list of Oscar winners after the jump.

Last thursday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 85th Annual Academy Awards. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" earned an astonishing 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Director and Leading Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis). Not far behind are Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" with 11 nods and "Les Miserables", directed by Tom Hooper and "Silver Linings Playbook", directed by David O. Russell, each with eight nominations.

One of the bigger surprises this year is the attention that the Academy focused on Michael Haneke's "Amour" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild". The french film earned not only the expected Foreign Film nomination but also 4 other nominations : Best Picture, Director, Writing (Original Screenplay) and Leading Actress (Emmanuelle Riva, 85 years old, the oldest nominee ever). "Beasts of the Southern Wild", an independent film which was extremely popular among critics in 2012 managed to earn 4 nominations : Best Picture, Director, Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and Best Leading Actress (QuvenzhanƩ Wallis, 9 years old, the youngest nominee ever).

The awards show will take place on February 14 and will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane ("Family Guy", "Ted").
