Weekend Box-Office: AMERICAN MADE, IT and KINGSMAN in Close Race to the Top Spot

As a record-breaking September at the box-office has come to an end, we have three movies in an extremely tight race to the top spot. "It", "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" and new arrival "American Made" are pretty much neck-and-neck, and studios are waiting for the actuals that will be announced later today before claiming victory.

This week in theaters we have the sequel "Kingsman: The Golden Circle", the animated spinoff "The LEGO Ninjago Movie", and the horror film "Friend Request". And the awards season kicks off with the limited releases "Battle of the Sexes" starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell, and "Stronger" starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Steve Carell and Emma Stone to Star in BATTLE OF THE SEXES

Academy Award nominees Steve Carell ("Foxcatcher") and Emma Stone ("Birdman") have signed on to star in "Battle of the Sexes", an adaptation of the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (Stone) and retired Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs (Carell). The historic match, dubbed Battle of the Sexes, earned the highest TV ratings since the Moon Landing.

The film will be directed by "Little Miss Sunshine" helmers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris from a script by Simon Beaufoy ("127 Hours"). Danny Boyle will serve as producer. According to Deadline, the film be "a comedy with dramatic and political overtones".

There are also two other projects on this topic in the works. One is an HBO film starring Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti, while the other is called "Match Maker" and it stars Will Ferrell.
