Berlin Film Festival 2020 Winners There Is No Evil

The winners of this year's Berlin Film Festival were announced on Saturday. Dissident Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof was awarded the Golden Bear for his film "There is No Evil" by the seven-person jury headed by Jeremy Irons. Rasoulof was unable to leave Iran due to a travel ban, and he faces a one-year prison sentence for "spreading propaganda". In a statement, the filmmaker expressed his sadness for this situation:
"I am sorry that I will not be able to come to Berlin to watch the film alongside the audience; however, the right to choose between being present or absent at the festival is simply not mine. Imposing such restrictions very clearly exposes the intolerant and despotic nature of the Iranian government."
The Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize went to Eliza Hittman's teenage abortion drama "Never Rarely Sometimes Always", while South Korea's Hong Sang Soo won the Silver Bear for best director. The trophies for best actress and actor went to Paula Beer for the German romantic drama "Undine" and Elio Germano for the Italian film "Hidden Away".

This year, the Alfred Bauer Prize has been replaced following the realisation that the award's namesake and the Berlinale's first director had been very closely affiliated with the Nazi Party.
