By 1935, the writing was on the wall for the staple at Hal Roach Studios: two-reel comedies. While his short films were still popular with the public, Roach's filmic output was losing ground financially to double features, necessitating that his stars either transition to feature films (like Laurel & Hardy) or find employment elsewhere. An exception was made for Our Gang as the producer continued to make one-reelers featuring the kiddie troupe with the focus on five members: Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Buckwheat and Porky.

With the length of the shorts cut in half (Our Gang Follies of 1938 [1937] being an exception), the finished streamlined product was both cost-effective and profitable. The change didn't seem to hurt the franchise either as the first one-reeler, Bored of Education (1936), won the Academy Award for Best (One-Reel) Short Subject the following year. In 1938, after two additional years of cranking out classic comedies, Roach would sell the property to MGM where the series continued until 1944.

The Little Rascals - The ClassicFlix Restorations, Volume 6 contains the final 23 Our Gang sound shorts produced by the Hal Roach Studios: Bored of Education (1936) to Hide and Shriek (1938)—with each short newly scanned and restored from the original Hal Roach 35mm film elements.

A must-have for any true Our Gang fan, Volume 6 features the talents of George "Spanky" McFarland, Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas, Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, Darla Hood, Eugene "Porky" Lee, Tommy "Butch" Bond and Sidney "Woim" Kibrick. With the departure of Wally Albright from "Our Gang" after the filming of Washee Ironee in late 1934, producer Hal Roach temporarily shifted the focus of the series back to George "Spanky" McFarland as he had done a year before when Dickie Moore left the "Lot of Fun". That all changed with the talent show-themed short Beginner's Luck (1935) where one competitor wouldn't win first prize… but he would soon win fame as one of the most popular "Little Rascals" performers in the franchise's history.

The youngster making his Our Gang debut in Luck was none other than seven-year-old Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, whose comical countenance—including a lard-assisted cowlick, a face smothered in freckles and a singing voice that was the dictionary definition of "off-key"—was put to use for maximum mirthmaking in such classics as Teacher's Beau (1935), The Lucky Corner (1936) and The Pinch Singer (1936). Alfalfa's unpleasant warbling was also a highlight of Our Gang Follies of 1936 (1935), the short that spoofed 1930s musical comedies and solidified the core of Our Gang for the next five years with the introduction of Darla Hood.

The Little Rascals - The ClassicFlix Restorations, Volume 5 contains the next 12 Our Gang sound shorts produced by the Hal Roach Studios: Anniversary Trouble (1935) to Arbor Day (1936)—with each short newly scanned and restored from the original Hal Roach 35mm film elements.

Product Description: All Joe Sullivan wants is "a breath of fresh air." But when you're serving time in stir for robbery, fresh air is a rare commodity. That's about to change though as mob boss Rick Coyle has greased the skids inside the prison walls, so Joe can make it outside where girlfriend Pat will be waiting.

But things don't exactly go as planned for the duo as car trouble during their getaway forces them to get help from the only person nearby -- strait-laced legal assistant Ann Martin, whom they kidnap and use to evade capture. Things aren't going as planned for Rick either who set up the escape fully expecting the fugitive to get "cut down" so he could keep the $50,000 he owes Joe for taking the rap for him.

Now past the dragnet, the trio each find themselves increasingly conflicted in their loyalties and core beliefs as Joe is torn between the two women, who both care for him, while Pat and Ann each make decisions that prove they're not as bad, or as good, as they're supposed to be.

Raw Deal presents the moviemaking team of director Anthony Mann and cinematographer John Alton at the peak of their success (fresh off their box office smash T-Men), offering dark, moody atmosphere filled with fog-shrouded landscapes and characters who are no strangers to the "left-handed endeavor" of crime. Scenarist John C. Higgins (He Walked by Night) and co-writer Leopold Atlas offer a taut, suspenseful tale of one man s desperate bid for freedom and the two women who love him.

Dennis O'Keefe, star of the earlier T-Men, contributes a first-rate performance as the determined Joe, with Marsha Hunt (Pride and Prejudice) as Ann and Oscar winning actress Claire Trevor (Key Largo) as the fiercely loyal Pat. Raw Deal also features a suitably slimy Raymond Burr as Rick, John Ireland as Burr's sadistic henchman Fantail, and noir standbys Regis Toomey and Whit Bissell. Raw Deal is film noir at its finest!
