"Doctor Who" and "Good Omens" star David Tennant is set to take on the role of prolific Scottish serial killer Dennis Nilsen in the upcoming ITV drama series "Des", from the makers of Sky and HBO's "Catherine the Great".

The three-part miniseries is based on the non-fiction book "Killing for Company" by Brian Masters, and it will follow the events surrounding Nilsen's arrest and trial, as police try to find some justice for his victims, while also examining the role of media coverage in the case and the effect his crimes had on those around him. Nilsen was responsible for the murders of at least 15 men and boys between 1978 and 1983.

Below is a first look at Tennant as Dennis Nilsen:

The series is written by Luke Neal and the cast also includes Ron Cook, Faye McKeever, Chanel Cresswell, Barry Ward, Tony Way, Bronagh Waugh, Laurie Kynaston, Ross Anderson, Ben Bailey Smith, Jay Simpson, Silas Carson, Stuart McQuarrie, Jamie Parker, Lex Shrapnel, Gerard Horan, Joel Morris, Jonathan Coy, Amy Booth-Steel, Ken Bones, Andrew Woodall and Amaka Okafor.

Here is what executive producer Kim Varvell had to say about the project:
"Dennis Nilsen's crimes shocked the nation in the early 1980s. Our program focuses on the emotional impact of those terrible crimes, both on those who came into contact with Nilsen himself, and also on the victims' families."
