Eugenio Derbez Photo
Mexican star Eugenio Derbez ("How to Be a Latin Lover") has signed on to star in the upcoming live-action "Dora the Explorer" movie. Based on the Nickelodeon television series that ran from 2000 until 2014, the film has already set Isabela Moner to star as the title character, a teenager who heads out on an adventure with her best friends, Boots the monkey, and her cousin Diego. There are no details available regarding Derbez's character in the film.

James Bobin ("The Muppets") will direct from a script by Nick Stoller and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, and production is expected to begin later this summer with the release date set for August 2, 2019.

Derbez has become quite a bankable star after breaking out in 2013 with the comedy "Instructions Not Included", which he also directed and co-wrote. He also starred in "How to Be a Latin Lover" and the recent "Overboard" remake, and appeared in "Geostorm" and "Miracles from Heaven".

Isabela Moner Picture
Sixteen-year-old actress Isabela Moner ("Transformers: The Last Knight", "Sicario: Day of the Soldado") is set to star in Paramount Pictures' live-action movie based on the popular Nickelodeon series "Dora the Explorer" that ran for eight seasons and 172 episodes.

Directed by James Bobin ("The Muppets") from a script by Nicholas Stoller ("Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising") and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, the film will follow the adventures of a teenage Dora (Moner), her friend Boots the monkey, and her cousin Diego. The film is produced by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes.

Here's what a studio representative had to say about Moner:
"We are thrilled to have found our Dora in Isabela. Dora has long been a celebrated, strong heroine in animated television, and like Dora, Isabela has an incredible spirit and is an advocate for positive values. With our partners at Nickelodeon, we look forward to continuing Dora’s story for generations to come."

Moner also spoke about her casting:
"I'm honored and excited to bring Dora to life. I grew up watching the show, and for me, especially as a Latina, Dora was an amazing role model — she is a strong, adventurous and fun-loving girl. I can’t wait to put on the backpack and begin her next adventure!"

"Dora the Explorer" will shoot in Queensland, Australia and is scheduled for release on August 2, 2019.
