New on Blu-ray: THE LUSTFUL TURK / THE JOYS OF JEZEBEL (1968-1970) - Sexploitation Double Feature

BUY FROM AMAZON

Product Description: During the 1960s, producer David F. Friedman’s ongoing quest to elevate the quality of sexploitation production led to numerous period pieces and costume comedies. Among his most lavish such efforts were THE LUSTFUL TURK (1968) and THE JOYS OF JEZEBEL (1969), each of which has been newly restored in 4K from their 35mm original camera negatives and come to Blu-ray for the very first time from Something Weird + Distribpix.

In THE LUSTFUL TURK (1968), the English aristocrat Emily Barlow is en route to India along with her handmaiden, when pirates seize hold of their ship. Taking the ladies back to their harem, their captors force them to partake in the most unspeakably erotic torments, which Emily reports in detail to her friend Sylvia back home via regularly written letters. Amid the depravity and barbarism of the world in which she's now held captive, the debauched Emily slowly calculates how she might take her revenge. Directed by Byron Mabe (She Freak), this raucous and sensual costume saga was penned by Friedman himself, and features Linda Stiles (Lee Frost’s The Animal) and Harvey Shain (Fugitive Girls).

Jezebel herself has just arrived in hell, but quickly strikes a deal with Lucifer in THE JOYS OF JEZEBEL (1969), so that she can return to earth provided she delivers to Lucifer the beautiful virgin Rachel. However, since the cunning Jezebel has scores to settle, she uses her powers to switch bodies with Rachel, sending the beautiful innocent back to hell in her place! While Lucifer searches for Rachel in hell, Jezebel is free to exact her revenge. An exquisitely beautiful and extraordinarily colorful sexy comedy, from director Peter Perry (Kiss Me Quick), THE JOYS OF JEZEBEL stars Luanne Roberts (101 Acts of Love) and Dixie Donovan (The Notorious Cleopatra).

DEVIL DOLL (1964) / CURSE OF THE VOODOO (1965) - Lindsay Shonteff Horror Double Feature New on Blu-ray

BUY FROM AMAZON

Product Description: Few filmmakers working in British genre cinema had more memorable careers than Lindsay Shonteff. The Canadian ex-pat produced an incredibly diverse body of work during his few decades spent toiling on the fringes of England’s low-budget film community. Still, few of his films have developed a wider - and more deserved - fan base than his set of 60s horror-shockers made for legendary producer Richard Gordon (Horror Hospital): DEVIL DOLL and CURSE OF THE VOODOO. Vinegar Syndrome is proud to offer both of these true cult classics, newly scanned and restored from their camera negatives in 4K and on Blu-ray for the first time.

Acclaimed magician The Great Vorelli dazzles audiences with his mastery of hypnosis while shocking them with a strange ventriloquist dummy named Hugo. Determined to uncover Vorelli’s methods for making Hugo’s movement and speech appear so real, reporter Mark English begins a covert investigation. However, nothing can prepare him for the strange and horrifying secret trapped inside the dummy, nor for the murderous actions it will take to be freed... Integrating the supernatural into a twist-filled story of revenge, DEVIL DOLL stars Bryant Haliday (Tower of Evil), William Sylvester (Gorgo), and Yvonne Romain (Night Creatures) and is presented in its “Continental” version, which has never before been seen complete and uncut on video!

Mike Stacey is a cold-blooded guide to novice big game hunters. While on safari in Africa, he has to clean up the mess of one of his clients, shooting a lion they wounded but couldn't kill. But no sooner than moving in to collect the body is he accosted by the local tribesmen who reveal that the lion is their deity and that any man who dares interfere will suffer unimaginable torments. Upon returning to England, Mike is besieged by unrelenting nightmares and a paranoid sense that he’s being watched, chased, and hunted like the animals he preys upon. As he descends further into madness, he realizes that the only way he can break the curse is by returning to Africa and again facing the deadly tribe... A 1960s update of Jungle adventure and horror films of the 1930s and 40s, CURSE OF THE VOODOO (aka Curse of Simba) again stars Bryant Haliday, Dennis Price (The Earth Dies Screaming), and Lisa Daniely (Lili Marlene).

ROOM 666 / ROOM 999 - Documentary Double Feature New on DVD & Blu-ray

BUY FROM AMAZON

Product Description: Two documentaries from Wim Wenders and Lubna Playoust, made nearly half a century apart, that capture the unfiltered perspectives of filmmaking luminaries by posing the same question: “Is cinema a language about to get lost, an art about to die?” At the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, Wim Wenders asked such filmmaking luminaries as Michelangelo Antonioni, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard, Yılmaz Güney, Werner Herzog, Susan Seidelman, and Steven Spielberg to ponder the question “Is cinema a language about to get lost, an art about to die?” Forty years later—adopting the same minimalist, fixed-camera format as Wenders—Lubna Playoust poses the same question to a group of contemporary auteurs, including David Cronenberg, Claire Denis, Asghar Farhadi, James Gray, Lynne Ramsay, and Wenders himself. Together, Wenders’ Room 666 and Playoust’s Room 999 capture the unfiltered perspectives of pathbreaking filmmakers on the state of the industry as well as the upheavals brought on by various new technologies and methods of distribution—in the process touching on large-scale issues of politics, culture, and the meaning (and continued relevance) of cinema in two distinct eras, nearly half a century apart.

TWO FACES OF TAI KATO - Blu-ray Double Feature Including BY A MAN'S FACE SHALL YOU KNOW HIM (1966) and I, THE EXECUTIONER (1968)

BUY FROM AMAZON

Product Description: Double feature of Japanese master Tai Kato's BY A MAN'S FACE SHALL YOU KNOW HIM and I, THE EXECUTIONER, released for the first time ever in HD in North America.

BY A MAN'S FACE SHALL YOU KNOW HIM: WWII veteran Dr. Amamiya (played by real life former yakuza Noboru Ando) runs a clinic in a downtrodden Japanese neighborhood. When an accident victim brought to him for treatment turns out to be his ethically Korean war buddy he recalls the criminal strife that practically ripped their town apart and changed their lives forever just some years earlier right after the war. Flashbacks reveal the brash and contentious Korean gang that tried to take over the local market and turn it into a red light district. While fueled by innate prejudice from the native Japanese residents, the hoodlums’ ruthless methods lead to unspeakably treacherous acts. As both sides’ anger escalates to the brink, Dr. Amamiya takes things in his own hands to try and control this untenable conflict. Director Tai Kato’s groundbreaking feature takes on controversial sociopolitical issues with his distinct cinematic aesthetic in a seamless blend of melodrama and action that is exemplary of his “superb craftsmanship and personal style” (Los Angeles Times).

I, THE EXECUTIONER: As the police investigate a sudden rash of brutal murders whose victims are all women the unscrupulous killer’s murky motivations remain hauntingly elusive. A labyrinthine character study slowly unfolds implying that the targets of these unspeakable acts may be culpable in their own shocking demise. Although director Tai Kato worked within the studio system mostly on genre films, his distinctly bold and somber style proved him a maverick auteur, with I, the Executioner one of his most incendiary masterpieces. Kato matches the film’s bleak narrative themes to its innovative aesthetics, “with blown out negatives, extreme close-ups, and deep focus mixed with his characteristic low angle composition to add to the sense of noirish dread which paints the modern city as an inescapable hellscape” (Haley Scanlon - Windows on Worlds).

New on Blu-ray: LIVING A ZOMBIE DREAM + KITTY KILLERS (1996) - SOV Double Feature

BUY FROM AMAZON

Product Description: Saturn’s Core presents a double feature of SOV features from visionary Springfield, Missouri based writer/director Todd Reynolds. A vital component in the Borderline Entertainment film collective, Todd consistently applied a unique, incongruous, and often absurdist approach to the conventions of whichever genre he chose to explore. Boasting the frequent collaboration of producer/editor Ronnie Sortor (Sinistre, Ravage) and special FX artist Mike Strain Jr. (Vile 21), Reynolds represents a singular voice from the ‘90s video underground that’s ripe and rightful for rediscovery.

In LIVING A ZOMBIE DREAM, a man discovers his brother is having an illicit affair with his girlfriend. After a heated confrontation, he witnesses his brother being captured and disemboweled by a flesh-eating psychopath. After murdering the maniac, he begins suffering from violent and perplexing hallucinations. Both his brother and the killer return from the dead amidst a horde of zombies and their desire to consume the flesh and blood of the living soon compels the man to follow in their footsteps. A Lynchian, analog meditation on life and death rife with shocking gore, bleeding handguns, and static filled TV sets, Reynolds’ arresting debut feature boldly bears the hallmarks of both an experimental art film and a homespun SOV zombie gore epic.

In KITTY KILLERS, a gang of eccentric, working class hitmen are ordered to torture and hold hostage the duplicitous business rivals of their psychotic, wheelchair-bound boss Mr. Hill. Things go haywire once the junior hitman falls for an innocent coffee shop poet named Kitty and his rampant narcissism leads to a chaotic crossroads of exploding squib hits, zen meditation, human flesh tic-tac-toe, and gluttonous doughnut consumption. A hyperviolent, post-Tarantino crime caper with self-reflective, transcendental underpinnings, KITTY KILLERS remains a potent illustration of Reynolds’ idiosyncratic approach to genre storytelling.

Product Description: The 1970s Punk Rock movement: New York had The Ramones, London had Sex Pistols, Australia had The Saints...

STRANDED takes a look at the role four musicians from suburban Brisbane played in the explosion of one of the all time greatest musical movements. Featuring interviews with the members of the band, including its leaders Ed Kuepper and Chris Bailey, as well as the likes of Sir Bob Geldof, former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra and Buzzcocks guitarist Steve Diggle, STRANDED examines how the oppressive and conservative government of Joh Bjelke-Petersen in the 1970s helped act as a catalyst for the rise of punk rock in Australia, and how as a result The Saints went on to be one of the most influential bands in the country.

COSMIC PSYCHOS: For 30 years, the Cosmic Psychos have blazed a trail of empty beer cans and busted ear drums around the globe with their quintessential Australian drawl and pounding punk rock songs.

With appearances (and party tricks) by Eddie Vedder, Mudhoney, The Melvins, Butch Vig, Hard-Ons, L7 (to name but a few), this doco is a full frontal assault on the senses. Loud, rugged and entertaining Blokes You can Trust shows all of the Psychos’ highs and lows riches and rip offs, line up changes and loss.
