It's been a tough week for Hollywood directors. For example, Jim Sheridan ("My Left Foot", "In America") is reported to have been so disappointed with the way "Dream House" turned out, that he has expressed his desire to have his name removed from the credits. Sheridan's movie, starring Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts was a troubled project, with many conflicts between Sheridan and both the studio and the movie's screenwriter, which prompted the director's ban from the editing process. The reason I've included the news about Sheridan here, is that the new Judge Dredd reboot is going through something very similar. Director Pete Travis ("Vantage Point") has been locked out of the project due to creative disagreements with the producers and studio executives, meaning that he will not be allowed to participate in the movie's prost-production stages (principal photography ended earlier this year). Screenwriter Alex Garland ("28 Days Later", "Sunshine") will step in to finish the project. While Garland is indeed a wonderfully creative person, he has never worked as a director before. The problem, however, seems to be even bigger than that, if we consider the fact that most movies with troubled productions turned out to be stinkers. As a case in point I give you "Dream House" a movie which opened to scathing reviews which tagged it as one of worst movies of the year, and whose director is seriously considering removing his name from the credits. Will Pete Travis do the same ? Probably not. I'm sure Sheridan won't either. It hasn't been done in a very long time, anyway. But, the fact remains that "Dredd" is a project which is losing its credibility too early in the game. The reboot stars Karl Urban as the dreaded Judge, Lena Headey, Olivia Thirlby and Domhnall Gleeson. The US release date is set for September 21, 2012.
