Disney is ready to strike hard at the Memorial Day weekend box-office with the release of "Aladdin", their latest live-action remake . The film has already brought in $7 million from Thursday night previews, and pundits are predicting a $60+ million debut from 4,400 theaters, and a total of up to $80 million for the four-day time frame. Critics are mostly mixed on "Aladdin", and the audience reception is confusing depending on which review aggregator websites you're checking out, but I don't believe there's anything stopping Disney from claiming the box-office crown this weekend.
The R-rated "Brightburn" provides a change of pace with a horror twist on the superhero genre. Starring Elizabeth Banks, and produced by "Guardians of the Galaxy" helmer, the film is expected to gross between $10 million and $13 million over the weekend from 2,600 theaters, and as much as $15 million for the extended holiday time frame.
Another new release is the R-rated comedy "Booksmart", actress Olivia Wilde's directorial debut, which is receiving glowing reviews from critics. And in limited release, it might be worth checking out the dramedy "Funny Story" starring Matthew Glave and Emily Bett Rickards.
