"Bacurau" is a Brazilian western-style thriller written and directed by Juliano Dornelles and Kleber Mendonça Filho.
The film is set in a fictional small town in the Brazilian sertão, where the inhabitants suddenly notice that their village has literally vanished from most maps and a UFO-shaped drone starts flying overhead. When a band of armed mercenaries arrive in town picking off the inhabitants one by one, a fierce confrontation ignites when the townspeople band together to turn the tables on the villainous outsiders.
The cast features Barbara Colen, Thomas Aquino, Silvero Pereira, Karine Teles, Sonia Braga and Udo Kier.
"Bacurau" was nominated for the Palme D'Or and the Queer Palm, and won the Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. It was released in select theaters in the U.S. on March 6, 2020.
