Weekend Box Office: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Beats 28 YEARS LATER In Its Sophomore Frame While ELIO Tanks

The "How to Train Your Dragon" live-action remake managed to hold on to its top spot position against Danny Boyle's zombie horror sequel "28 Years Later", which didn't quite explode at the box office, but did okay for an R-rated horror film and a sequel to a franchise which saw its last installment 18 years ago. Meanwhile, Pixar's latest original film "Elio" failed to find its audience and provided a bleak record for the studio.

Weekend Box Office: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Beats LILO & STITCH In Duel of the Live-Action Remakes

In the very definition of "creative bankruptcy", this past weekend saw two live-action remakes from rival studios duking it out for the top spot at the box-office. It wasn't much of a battle, though, as DreamWorks' new "How to Train Your Dragon" effortlessly swooped in to dethrone Disney's new "Lilo & Stitch", which was already in its fourth weekend in theaters. Meanwhile, for the grown-up moviegoers, we had A24's "Materialists" starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, which did okay in its first weekend, and the Stephen King adaptation "The Life of Chuck", which failed to find an audience as it expanded nationwide.

Weekend Box-Office: LILO & STITCH Continues To Dominate As BALLERINA Opens to $24.5 Million

The live-action "Lilo & Stitch" movie effortlessly dominated the box office in its third weekend in theaters, while the John Wick spinoff "Ballerina" is off to sluggish start. Meanwhile, Wes Anderson's new film "The Phoenician Scheme" expanded nationwide, and the survival horror film "Dangerous Animals" failed to make the Top 10.

Weekend Box Office: LILO & STITCH and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Hold off Against KARATE KID: LEGENDS

After breaking the Memorial Day Weekend record, "Lilo & Stitch" is holding in first place in its sophomore frame despite a considerable drop. Same goes for "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning", but with more underwhelming results. The martial arts drama "Karate Kid: Legends", Sony's latest attempt to revive the "Karate Kid" franchise, fell short of expectations and delivered a lackluster debut. "Talk to Me" filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou's new horror film "Bring Her Back" also opened in theaters with modest results.

Weekend Box Office: LILO & STITCH Beats MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING With Highest Memorial Day Opening Ever

Disney's live action remake "Lilo & Stitch" exploded at the the Memorial Day box office while Tom Cruise's final chapter in the "Mission: Impossible" saga scored a franchise-high debut. Meanwhile, Angel Studios' new film "The Last Rodeo" didn't make much of an impression. Overall, it was a strong weekend at the box office after a couple of underwhelming months, setting a new Memorial Day record as the Top Ten movies earned a total of around $325 million over the 4-day frame, surpassing 2013's previous record of $314 million. It's also a vast improvement over last year's $132.7 million Memorial Day weekend.
