"Mortal Kombat II" is a martial arts fantasy action sequel directed by Simon McQuoid from a script by Jeremy Slater based on the video game franchise of the same name created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The film, which is a sequel to 2021's "Mortal Kombat", stars Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. Ludi Lin in Talks to Play Liu Kang in MORTAL KOMBAT Movie

Chinese-Canadian actor Ludi Lin is in negotiations to join the cast of New Line's upcoming "Mortal Kombat" reboot. The live-action adaptation will be directed by commercial helmer Simon McQuoid from a script from Greg Russo, and produced by James Wan ("The Conjuring", "Saw").

Lin is in talks for the role of Liu Kang, one of the seven original characters introduced in the first "Mortal Kombat" game, which was released in 1992. The movie will follow a male protagonist who becomes drawn into an interdimensional tournament, and who begins to realize his true potential as a result of the experience.

The video game franchise has been previously adapted for the big screen in New Line's 1995 film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, which earned $120 million worldwide despite being torn apart by critics. It was followed by a sequel in 1997, which was both a critical and box-office disaster. Other adaptations include two TV shows (one animated and one live-action), as well as two web series from director Kevin Tancharoen. Warner Bros. has acquired Midway Games assets in 2009 in bankruptcy court.

The reboot is currently in pre-production and will begin shooting in Adelaide later this year, where it is set to be the biggest production in South Australia's state history. The film will open in theaters on March 5, 2021.

Ludi Lin has recently starred in James Wan's "Aquaman", and the 2017 "Power Rangers" reboot. He also played a Mortal Kombat-type character in the episode "Striking Vipers" of "Black Mirror" Season 5. Other appearances include Netflix's "Marco Polo" and China's hit blockbuster "Monster Hunt".

His future projects include the biopic "Son of the South", which is executive produced by Spike Lee, and Netflix's Chinese-language original six-part series "The Ghost Bride".

MORTAL KOMBAT Movie Finds Its Sub-Zero

"The Raid" and "Fast & Furious 6" actor Joe Taslim has signed on to star in New Line Cinema's upcoming "Mortal Kombat" movie. The reboot will be directed by first-time feature film helmer Simon McQuoid from a script by Greg Russo.

Taslim, a veteran of the Indonesian national judo team, will play iconic ninja Sub-Zero, one of the original characters of the video game franchise created by Midway, along with Johnny Cage, Kano, Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Goro, Shang Tsung, and Reptile.

The last game in the series, "Mortal Kombat 11" was released in April and it became the most successful launch in franchise history. The entire video game franchise is closing in on a total of $50 million copies sold. Warner Bros. acquired Midway's assets in 2009 in bankruptcy court and began developing a reboot in 2011 with Kevin Tancharoen attached to direct. The project eventually fell through three years later.

There have been two previous big screen adaptations, Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 cult classic of the same name that grossed $122 million worldwide, and a sequel in 1997, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation", which was directed by cinematographer John R. Leonetti.

"Mortal Kombat" will be produced by "The Conjuring" helmer James Wan and Todd Garner, while Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear and Sean Robins are on board as executive producers.

Filming is expected to begin later this year in southern Australia. The release date has been set for March 5, 2021.
