"The First Purge" is a prequel set sometime in the mid-21st century that portrays the origins of the infamous 12-hour killing spree known as the annual Purge, when all crime in America is legal. The film is written and produced by franchise creator James DeMonaco, and directed by Gerard McMurray. The cast features Y'lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, Mugga, Patch Darragh and Marisa Tomei.

"The First Purge" opened in theaters on July 4, 2018 and received mixed reviews from critics. The film opened with $31.3 million over the extended five-day opening weekend.

Weekend Box-Office: ANT-MAN Sequel Tops the Charts

Marvel scores another win with the latest MCU installment "Ant-Man and the Wasp". Meanwhile, "The First Purge" scored a decent debut, but the lowest in the franchise, so far.

Marvel's new film "Ant Man and the Wasp" is now in theaters and will probably dominate the weekend box-office. Another new release is the horror action film "The First Purge", the fourth installment in the dystopian franchise created by James DeMonaco. In limited release it might be worth checking out the animated romantic fantasy "Fireworks" from Studio Shaft, and the sci-fi comedy "Sorry to Bother You".
