UNSTOPPABLE (2010)

After the "Pelham 123" fiasco, Tony Scott gives trains another try, with decidedly superior results. Fast and loud, this movie is pretty much what you'd expect from the director. Forget about using your brain on this one, just let yourself get carried away by the deafening spectacle. Denzel Washington and Chris Pine provide the human element in this hyperactive story of a runaway train, and their presence adds greatly to the movie. Suspenseful and full of great action scenes, "Unstoppable" is not just better than expected, but also a superior action movie. Also available on Blu-Ray.

Winner of 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, "Rain Man" finally gets the Blu-Ray treatment. Boasting an excellent award-winning Dustin Hoffman performance, a young confident Tom Cruise and a wonderfully melodramatic story, this movie is a worthy addition to any collection. Even though Barry Levinson's output has varied wildly throughout the years, this story about the difficult relationship between an autistic man (Hoffman) and his selfish brother (Cruise) has constantly remained his most talked-about achievement.

Another classic released on Blu-Ray this week, "Moonstruck" is probably more famous because Cher won an Academy Award for Best Leading Actress for the role of a widow trying to rediscover love. What it should be famous for is Norman Jewison's unique blend of comedy and romance, (see also the 1994 "Only You"), and John Patrick Shanley's witty script. "Moonstruck" set the bar higher for all   romantic comedies. That bar seems to have dropped a few notches nowadays, which makes it all the more fun to go back to the classics.

Newly released on Blu-Ray and DVD, "Summer Wars" is a wonderfully surreal Japanese animation feature. A fascinating mix of cyberpunk and anime, beautifully drawn and featuring a complex story, this animated sci-fi adventure is guaranteed to thrill and intrigue even the most skeptical viewers out there. It might feel a bit unusual for those unfamiliar with anime, but I strongly recommend it nonetheless.
