Product Description: “Mirror wall, disco ball/I’ve never looked better, and I’ve never felt worse.” Rachel Chinouriri lays it all out on the dance floor in the first verses of “One song away from crying,” the lead-off track on her second studio album I think I spoke too soon. Over the course of its 12 songs, the alt-pop singer-songwriter careens through a wild night out—and the aftermath of it, emotional and otherwise.
“I am a completely different person to who I thought I was, which is difficult when you’re then in the public eye, because I’ve presented myself one way,” she tells Apple Music. “Suddenly, I’m like, wait, no, I don’t like drinking. I’m maybe more introverted than I thought I may see myself, in a different way.”
“Broken chair”’s synth melody is irresistible, but so are its shameless lyrics bubbling up from a bad hangover: “I love drinking ’til it’s over/You all love me ’til I’m sober/I’m walking home the morning after/Your friendly neighborhood disaster.”
From the fatalistic romance of “Pretty girls” to “Parasite” and its bitter fight that erupts at the end of a bender, Chinouriri keeps her pen sharp, even if she’s processing the chaos while she’s still in it—or accepting its consequences. But I think I spoke too soon is more than just a meditation on partying and its impact: It’s a look at getting older and wiser, an aspect of growing up that Chinouriri was eager to tackle.
“I just started reflecting on the nuances of your early twenties, because you always get told, ‘It’s different after 25,’” she says. “When I hit 25, I was like, ‘Oh, my goodness.’”
