Product Description: Former Danity Kane member Dawn Richard has spent the better part of two decades blazing her own ambitious, independent trail, from her wild, mythic Heart trilogy (2013’s Goldenheart, 2015’s Blackheart, and 2016’s Redemptionheart) to her collaborations with neoclassical composer Spencer Zahn.
On her 2019 album, New Breed, Richard found inspiration in her formative years growing up in New Orleans’ 9th Ward as the daughter of a musician; her father, Frank Richard, was the lead singer of the funk band Chocolate Milk. Its follow-up, 2021’s Second Line: An Electro Revival, continued the narrative through her mother’s eyes. And though she hadn’t intended to create another triptych, Richard realized that one last part of the story was missing—her own.
On creole culture, the last piece of the trilogy, the singer digs even deeper into her roots as a Black and Native American woman from New Orleans. That means a brassy live band (which includes drummer Greg Paul, saxophonist David Otis, and trombonist Jonah Levine), snippets of spoken word in Louisiana Creole, and cameos from local legends like Big Freedia and Anjelika Jelly Joseph. The centerpiece is a UK garage-inspired rework of “Groove City,” a 1979 song by her father’s band.
