"Back Roads" is a drama directed by and starring Alex Pettyfer ("I Am Number Four") based on the novel of the same name written by Tawni O'Dell, who also penned the film's script.

The film tells the story of a young man (Pettyfer) stuck in the Pennsylvania backwoods caring for his three younger sisters after the shooting death of his abusive father and the arrest of his mother (Juliette Lewis). Angered and traumatized by his painful past, he finally begins to feel hope when he connects with an older, married woman (Jennifer Morrison), and they embark on an affair, but shocking family secrets and unspoken truths threaten to consume him. Nicola Peltz, Chiara Aurelia, Hala Finley, Robert Patrick and June Carry co-star.

"Back Roads" premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and opened in select theaters on December 7, 2018. The film has received generally positive reviews from critics.

The post title should actually read "In Select Theaters", because this week there are no new wide releases. Instead, we have a varied selection of limited releases with awards ambitions. • The gritty thriller "Back Roads" directed by and starring Alex Pettyfer. The screenplay is based on the best-selling novel by Tawni O'dell, who also co-wrote the script with filmmaker Adrian Lyne ("Indecent Proposal", "Unfaithful", "Fatal Attraction").
• The second season of HBO's darkly comic series "Room 104". Guest stars this season include Michael Shannon, Mahershala Ali, Judy Greer, Brian Tyree Henry, Charlyne Yi, Dolly Wells and Rainn Wilson.
