Gerard Butler returns as United States Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the threequel "Angel Has Fallen", which is now in theaters. The new installment has received a mixed reception from critics, which is pretty much on par with the rest of series, but audiences seem to love the movie as CinemaScore reports an "A-" grade from opening night polls, and pundits expect the film to top the box-office charts. It already raked in an impressive $1.5 million from previews at 2,600 locations, and it could finish the weekend with as much as $15 million, or more, from 3,286 theaters.
The horror comedy "Ready or Not" starring Samara Weaving opened this Friday in 2,855 theaters and brought in $1.9 million on opening day, including $730,000 from previews, so pundits expect this one to finish outside the Top 5 with around $5 million. Both the film's critical and audience receptions have been generally positive ("B+" from CinemaScore).
The last new semi-wide release is Sony' faith-based drama "Overcomer" from the creators of "War Room". The film opened in 1,723 theaters and brought in $772,000 from Thursday previews. Although it has received a mixed critical reception, audience reactions have been very positive ("A+" from CinemaScore). However, it won't be enough it seems as the film is expected to gross around $5 million in its opening weekend.
In limited release it might be worth checking out the comedy "Brittany Runs a Marathon" starring Jillian Bell, which won the Audience Award at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and was also nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.
