Brainwashed Sex Camera Power New On Dvd Bluray

Product Description: "If the camera is predatory, then the culture is predatory." In this eye-opening documentary, celebrated independent filmmaker Nina Menkes explores the sexual politics of cinematic shot design. Using clips from hundreds of movies we all know and love – from Metropolis to Vertigo to Phantom Thread – Menkes convincingly makes the argument that shot design is gendered. Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power illuminates the patriarchal narrative codes that hide within supposedly “classic” set-ups and camera angles, and demonstrates how women are frequently displayed as objects for the use, support, and pleasure of male subjects. Building on the essential work of Laura Mulvey and other feminist writers, Menkes shows how these not-so-subtle embedded messages affect and intersect with the twin epidemics of sexual abuse and assault, as well as employment discrimination against women, especially in the film industry. The film features interviews with an all-star cast of women and non-binary industry professionals including Julie Dash, Penelope Spheeris, Charlyne Yi, Joey Soloway, Catherine Hardwicke, Eliza Hittman, Maria Giese, and Rosanna Arquette. The result is an electrifying call-to-action that will fundamentally change the way you see, and watch, movies.

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

Director Catherine Hardwicke has a knack for movies about troubled teenagers, but honestly, mixing her favorite topic with the fantasy genre yielded less than spectacular results (see the 2008 "Twilight"). 2011s "Red Riding Hood" was no exception. Hardwicke tore the classic fairy tale to pieces and glossed it over with thick layers of teen soap-opera and muddled supernatural lore. Apparently, Harwicke's still stuck on "Twilight" mode. Amanda Seyfried is talented enough to make her character shine through all of this mess, but even that's not enough to redeem the movie. However, on a positive note, if you really liked this movie, you'll be glad to know that the Blu-Ray edition has an impressive amount of Special Features.

BATTLE : LOS ANGELES

Synopsis : For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world - Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before. -- (c) Sony

Starring : Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan

Director : Jonathan Liebesman

Screenplay : Christopher Bertolini

Running Time : 116 min

Rating : PG-13 for sustained and intense sequences of war violence and destruction, and for language.

What to Expect : Loud hardcore sci-fi action, like "War of the Worlds" on steroids. I've actually enjoyed the trailers so far and the studio's attempt to sell this as a sort of realistic invasion war movie of sorts. I have my doubts about that, but there is a good chance it's going to be an exciting movie, or at the very least better that "Skyline".

RED RIDING HOOD

Synopsis : Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider Peter, but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry. Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves. -- (c) Warner Bros.

Starring : Amanda Seyfried, Lukas Haas, Gary Oldman

Director : Catherine Hardwicke

Screenplay : David Johnson

Running Time : 100 min

Rating : PG-13 for violence and creature terror, and some sensuality.

What to Expect : "Twillight" with a Brothers Grimm twist and a bit of Shyamalan's "The Village" vibe. Not the most original offering out there, but a pretty gutsy mix of fairy tales and pop culture. So what if it's grossly disrespectful of the original story, as long as it's going to appeal to the teenage population and get them to spend money ?

JANE EYRE

Synopsis : Jane Eyre flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester. As she reflects upon the people and emotions that have defined her, it is clear that the isolated and imposing residence - and Mr. Rochester's coldness - have sorely tested the young woman's resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned. She must now act decisively to secure her own future and come to terms with the past that haunts her - and the terrible secret that Mr. Rochester is hiding and that she has uncovered. (c) Focus Features

Starring : Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell

Director : Cary Fukunaga

Screenplay : Moira Buffini, based on the novel by Charlotte Bronte

Running Time : 115 min

Rating : PG-13 for some thematic elements including a nude image and brief violent content.

What to Expect : Yet another Jane Eyre adaptation. It's probably not a bad movie, but Bronte purists will surely cringe at the liberties the director and writer have probably taken while adapting the well known novel, because let's face it, no adaptation ever escapes the addition or removal of plot elements. On a positive note, the casting does seem to be inspired and will probably prove to be a good reason to see this movie.

MARS NEEDS MOMS

Synopsis : Nine-year-old Milo finds out just how much he needs his mom when she's nabbed by Martians who plan to steal her mom-ness for their own young. "Mars Needs Moms" showcases Milo's quest to save his mom-a wild adventure that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader . With the help of a tech-savvy, underground earthman named Gribble and a rebel Martian girl called Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), Milo just might find his way back to his mom-in more ways than one. -- (c) Disney

Starring (voice) : Seth Green, Joan Cusack, Dan Fogler

Director : Simon Wells

Screenplay : Simon Wells & Wendy Wells, based on a book by Berkeley Breathed

Running Time : 88 min

Rating : PG for sci-fi action and peril

What to Expect : Another ghoulish motion-capture animation feature, only without Robert Zemeckis' flair and experience. Honestly, is Simon Wells the best Disney could muster to direct this ? I mean his animation resume isn't very flattering and he did botch the big-screen adaptation of his great-grandfather's novel, "The Time Machine". Disney must not trust this project much anyway, otherwise they would have pushed for a summer release.
