"1917" is a war drama directed, co-written and produced by
Sam Mendes. The film is based in part on an account told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather,
Alfred Mendes, and it chronicles the story of two young British soldiers during the First World War who are given an impossible mission: to deliver a message deep in enemy territory that will stop 1,600 men, and one of the soldiers' brothers, from walking straight into a deadly trap.
The ensemble cast features
Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Daniel Mays, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Colin Firth, Claire Duburcq, Adrien Scarborough, Jamie Parker and
Richard McCabe.
The film has won two Golden Globes this year for Best Picture and Director, and has received nine BAFTA nominations, including Best Film.
"1917" opened in select theaters in the U.S. on December 25, 2019. It will expand nationwide on January 10, 2020, and on the same day it will also be released in the U.K.
