Ren Meguro Joins SHOGUN Season 2; New And Returning Cast Announced

The writers, directors and new and returning cast members for the second season of the Emmy-winning historical epic series "Shogun" have been revealed. The new season is set ten years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined. The second season will stream exclusively on Disney+, with all episodes of season one available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.

Returning cast members include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno and Yuka Kouri.

Newcomers include Asami Mizukawa as Aya, Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito and Jun Kunimura as Gōda. Japanese pop star and actor Ren Meguro was also recently added to the cast as Kazutada.

In a statement, Meguro had this to say about his casting: "I am incredibly honored to join the cast of 'Shogun' season two. When I streamed 'Shogun' on Disney+ last year, I was profoundly moved by the series' unique and grand portrayal of Japan, which felt different from past portrayals. Season 1 directors Hiromi Kamata (Season 1, Episode 6 "Ladies of the Willow World") and Takeshi Fukunaga (Season 1, Episode 7 "A Stick of Time") return to direct on the second season. Anthony Byrne, Kate Herron and series co-creator Justin Marks will also direct episodes in Season 2. Writers on Season 2 include co-creator Rachel Kondo, Marks, Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente and Sofie Somoroff.

Based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, "Shogun" was created for television by Kondo and Marks, who also executive produce alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, Sanada, Jarvis, and Eriko Miyagawa. The first season broke the record for most Emmy Award wins by a series in a single season with 18 statuettes.

Cosmo Jarvis Joins Hiroyuki Sanada in SHOGUN Season 2 Which Starts Production in 2026

The second season of FX's Emmy-winning drama series "Shōgun" is set to begin production in January in Vancouver where the first installment was shot. Cosmo Jarvis has has already signed on to reprise his role as English pilot John Blackthorne, joining Hiroyuki Sanada, who was already set to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. After being conceived as a limited series, the show was renewed for a second season, and while there is talk of a third season, nothing has been confirmed. Sanada, a producer on the first season, will now be an executive producer for Season 2, while Jarvis will co-executive produce.

As for the new season's story, it has been described as "a wholly original new chapter to the first season", which has already covered all of Clavell's bestselling novel, and will continue "the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined". The new chapter will take place 10 years after the events in the first season. Series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, stated that they will use elements and chracters from the novel that they didn't use in Season 1.

Produced by FX Productions, "Shōgun" is the most-viewed program in FX history. Marks and Kondo are executive producers alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca Sanada, and Jarvis.

The first season of "Shōgun" won 18 Emmy Awards, setting the record for the most Emmy Awards by a series in a single season and delivering FX's first Outstanding Drama Series Emmy. Sanada became the first Japanese actor to win the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Sawai made history as the first actress of Asian descent to win Lead Actress in the same category.

Hiroyuki Sanada to Return for SHOGUN Season 2

Although FX's Japan-set historical epic "Shogun" was originally conceived as a limited series, it has been revealed that it's close to getting a Season 2 renewal. Not only that, but Hiroyuki Sanada has signed on to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

Details for a new season are still being finalized. Sanada also served as a producer on the series and was heavily involved in everything from the script translation process to the day-to-day scenes. In the event of a new season, Cosmo Jarvis would likely also return the reprise his role of Pilot-Major John Blackthorne.

The timing of the decision is apparently closely tied to the deadline for Emmy submissions. As a result of the show's status change, FX would have to move "Shogun" into the drama series categories in this year's Emmy race.

The limited series is based on James Clavell's 1975 book of the same name. It's it's the second adaptation of the novel following the 1980 NBC miniseries. The limited series was a massive hit for FX, which was great since it was also the network's most expensive series to date. The first episode secured 9 million views globally across Hulu, Disney+ and Star+ in its first six days of streaming.

"Minamata" is a drama directed by Andrew Levitas ("Lullaby") from a script by David Kessler based on the book of the same name by Aileen Mioko Smith and Eugene Smith.

The film follows war photographer W. Eugene Smith (Johnny Depp) as he travels back to Japan where he documents the devastating effect of mercury poisoning in coastal communities. Bill Nighy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Minami Hinase, Tadanobu Asano and Katherine Jenkins co-star.

The sci-fi horror film "Life" tells the story of a team of six scientists aboard the International Space Station who stumble upon the greatest discovery in human history: evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. Soon they realize that the alien organism should be prevented at all costs from reaching Earth, otherwise it's game over for all humanity.

Bill Condon's mystery drama "Mr. Holmes" opens today in theaters, so here are three new trailers, five clips and a behind-the-scenes featurette for the movie.

Ian McKellen reunites with his "Gods and Monsters" director in this new tale based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes which finds the 93-year-old detective coming out of retirement for one last case.

The film has been earning rave reviews from critics who praised the film's writing, its focus on character exploration, and McKellen's amazing (as usual) performance.

The film also stars Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Hiroyuki Sanada, Patrick Kennedy and Hattie Morahan.

The first teaser trailer, clip and poster have been released for the mystery drama "Mr. Holmes". The film reteams director Bill Condon with his "Gods and Monsters" star Ian McKellen in a new twist on the world of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The story takes place in 1947 where the 93-year-old detective is living in retirement until he decides to follow up on an old unsolved case. The film also stars Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Hiroyuki Sanada, Patrick Kennedy and Hattie Morahan.

"Mr. Holmes" opens in theaters on June 19th in the U.K.

First Trailer and Images for EXTANT Starring Halle Berry

The first trailer and three new images have been released for the sci-fi series "Extant". Halle Berry stars as an astronaut who returns home from a year long solo mission in space and tries to reconnect with her husband and son in their everyday life. But, her experiences in space and home lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history. I've heard a lot of comparisons with "Gravity" when this trailer was released online, but really, it looks like the space mission will only be a small part of the series. I don't think that if any movie takes place in space, it should immediately be compared to "Gravity". The show is produced by Steven Spielberg and also stars Camryn Manheim, Goran Visnjic, Grace Gummer, Michael O’Neil and Hiroyuki Sanada.

"Extant" premieres on CBS Wednesday, July 9th.
