Antonio Banderas Joins the Cast of INDIANA JONES 5
"The Mask of Zorro" star Antonio Banderas is the latest actor to join the cast of "Indiana Jones 5". The sequel also stars Harrison Ford, who will reprise the role of the titular protagonist, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson and Thomas Kretschmann.

The film is directed by James Mangold ("Logan", "Ford v Ferrari") from a script he co-wrote alongside Jez & John-Henry Butterworth ("Edge of Tomorrow").

Steven Spielberg, who directed the first four installments, will executive produce along with Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel. John Williams, the 89-year-old composer who has worked on all four films in the franchise, will return to write the score.

Production is currently underway at Pinewood Studios near London. The release date has been set for July 29, 2022. No plot details are available at this point.

Banderas recently starred in "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" and can next be seen in the Spanish comedy "Official Competition" in which he stars opposite Penelope Cruz. He also recently finished production on Sony's "Uncharted" movie, and will return to star in DreamWorks Animation's sequel "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish".

Mads Mikkelsen to Star Alongside Harrison Ford in INDIANA JONES 5
Mads Mikkelsen is set to star in the fifth installment of the "Indiana Jones" film series, which will be directed by James Mangold ("Logan", "The Wolverine").

Harrison Ford is reprising his iconic role, and recently Emmy winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge ("Fleabag") also joined the cast as the female lead. No plot details have been revealed, so we don't know who Waller-Bridge and Mikkelsen will be playing. Legendary composer John Williams will also return to score the film.

Steven Spielberg will be involved in the making of the film as a producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel. After several delays, the film has been scheduled for release on July 29, 2022.

Mangold said the following in a statement:
"I'm thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers. Steven, Harrison, Kathy, Frank, and John are all artistic heroes of mine. When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can't help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself."

Mikkelsen recently starred in Thomas Vinterberg's Oscar-nominated film "Another Round" and can next be seen in the Danish action dramedy "Riders of Justice". He also replaced Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in the third "Fantastic Beasts" movie, and is attached to star in the biopic "The Billion Dollar Spy" directed by Amma Asante based on David E. Hoffman's book.

"Indiana Jones 5" has been in development limbo for some years now and for a long time everyone thought that Disney, the new owners of the Lucasfilm properties, would just reboot it with a new lead actor. But now, the long-awaited fifth installment in the franchise has been officially announced and it won't be a reboot.

Disney released an official press release (below), in which they confirm that the new Indiana Jones film will be a sequel and that Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg will return alongside veteran producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. Even more important is that we now have a release date: July 19, 2019. Maybe fans aren't too excited about the prospect of this turning out to be another "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skul" (which I personally enjoyed despite its obvious flaws), but this could also be a second chance to provide a fitting ending to the character's saga.

Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg return for Indiana Jones 5
"Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on July 19, 2019, for a fifth epic adventure in the blockbuster series. Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office."
