Sadie Mckee 1934 Joan Crawford New On Bluray

Product Description: In this vivid melodrama, Joan Crawford is Sadie McKee, who must choose between love (with Gene Raymond) and money (with Edward Arnold) and eventually gets both (with Franchot Tone). Crawford had an amazing ability to adapt her screen persona with changing times. She was a frenetic flapper in the '20s, a chin-up working girl in the '30s, and a film noir femme fatale in the '40s. Here she is at her Depression-Era peak as Sadie, a maid who sacrifices all for love, suffers like crazy but somehow winds up happy at the end. The leading lady gets excellent support from her three co-stars. Tone (who was soon to become Crawford's second husband)and Raymond are compelling as the handsome young suitors in her life, one good, one a scoundrel. And Edward Arnold is particularly memorable in his sympathetic portrayal of the millionaire drunk Sadie marries. But from rags to riches, from heartbreak to happiness, the film is all Crawford's.

Humoresque 1946 New On Bluray

Product Description: Glamorous socialite Helen Wright (Joan Crawford) takes what she wants -- clothes, alcohol, men -- uses them up and tosses them aside. Then she meets brilliant young violinist Paul Boray (John Garfield). But this is one toy she can't break. Instead, her love for Paul brings Helen to the breaking point. In this acclaimed and profound exploration of desire, Crawford makes Helen a rich, layered character torn between selfless love and selfish impulses. Garfield matches her as the driven genius. Humoresque's production values extend to the musical interludes, dubbed by Isaac Stern. Garfield's dazzling technique is thanks to two real violinists hidden behind him -- one to do the fingering and one the bow work. Bravo!

The Shining Hour 1938 New On Bluray

Product Description: When Joan Crawford saw The Shining Hour on the Broadway stage, she pleaded with M-G-M executives to let her spread her acting wings in the film version. Ms. Crawford got her way, playing a New York siren who marries a prosperous farmer (Melvyn Douglas) and moves to Wisconsin. There she is drawn to his handsome brother (Robert Young), even as she befriends the brother’s selfless wife (Margaret Sullavan, Crawford’s choice for the role). The passionate triangle plays out in the best tradition of classic screen melodrama: glossy and chic, but resonant with honest emotion, all under the expert direction of the great Frank Borzage. The film’s heart-stopping climax with Crawford battling flames to rescue Sullavan from certain death is both literally and figuratively, incendiary filmmaking.

Dance Fools Dance 1931 New On Bluray

Product Description: Look out, Jake Luva. That sinuous moll cuddling up to you on the dance floor isn't the floozy she seems. She's Bonnie Jordan, es-society girl and undercover reporter, investigating a murder that has your fingerprints all over it. She has what it takes, all right - to take you and your crime empire down. As Bonnie and Jake, Joan Crawford and Clark Gable exude plenty of pre-code sensuality in their first screen teaming. Gable is fifth-billed, but the moment he and Crawford go into a clinch, there is no question who in the film could match her star power. Crawford and Gable went on to make seven more films together. And each smoldered with the red-hot chemistry originally sparked in Dance, Fools, Dance.

Freaks The Unknown The Mystic Tod Brownings Sideshow Shockers New On Bluray Criterion Collection

Product Description: The world is a carnival of criminality, corruption, and psychosexual strangeness in the twisted pre-Code shockers of Tod Browning. Early Hollywood’s edgiest auteur, Browning drew on his experiences as a circus performer to create subversive pulp entertainments set amid the world of traveling sideshows, which, with their air of the exotic and the disreputable, provided a pungent backdrop for his sordid tales of outcasts, cons, villains, and vagabonds. Bringing together two of his defining works (The Unknown and Freaks) and a long-unavailable rarity (The Mystic), this cabinet of curiosities reveals a master of the morbid whose ability to unsettle is matched only by his daring compassion for society’s most downtrodden.

Flamingo Roar 1949 New On Bluray

Product Description: Joan Crawford stars as a dancer in a traveling circus. Stranded in a corrupt Southern town, she is framed for murder by a crooked sheriff.

Joan Crawford’s triumphant performance in Warner Bros. MILDRED PIERCE (1945) earned her a Best Actress Oscar, paving the way for future leading roles in the studio’s best productions. Crawford followed with HUMORESQUE, POSSESSED, and then reunited with her MILDRED PIERCE director Michael Curtiz, for 1949’s FLAMINGO ROAD. Based on a play by Robert and Sally Wilder the story finds Crawford cast as carnival dancer Lane Bellamy, who finds herself stranded in a small town. When she meets Fielding Carlisle, the local Deputy Sheriff (Zachary Scott), he takes a liking to her, and offers to help Lane by getting her a job as a waitress. The politically ambitious county sheriff, Titus Semple (Sydney Greenstreet) is blatant in his political ambitions, and has positioned himself to serve as a supporter of Fielding Carlisle’s rise in the community, positioning him to run for Governor, but with the secret motivation of advancing his own personal interests. Titus Semple takes an immediate dislike to Lane Bellamy, and has her unjustly railroaded to prison. Meanwhile, Fielding marries society belle, the lovely Annabelle Weldon (Virginia Huston). After her release from prison, Lane is determined not to be subject to Semple’s nefarious abuses again, and gets herself a new job at a roadhouse run by Lute Mae Sanders (Gladys George). State politicians often gather there, and soon Lane meets the suave and handsome Dan Reynolds (David Brian), who is Semple’s main political revival. Dan and Lane soon fall in love and marry. With Titus Semple’s political ambitions serving to build conflict, and Fielding’s own personal spiral leading to alcoholism, jealous of Dan and Lane’s marriage, the story builds to a thrilling conclusion where Lane takes matters into her own hands to defeat Titus Semple…but at what cost?

This new Blu-ray presentation of FLAMINGO ROAD is derived from a new 1080p HD master from the best available preservation elements, with both fully restored picture and audio. The film is coupled with several extras including a production featurette CRAWFORD AT WARNERS, a classic Warner Bros. cartoon CURTAIN RAZOR starring Porky Pig (in HD!), the studio’s blooper reel BREAKDOWNS OF 1949, a radio broadcast from SCREEN DIRECTOR’S PLAYHOUSE starring Joan Crawford with director Michael Curtiz, and the film’s theatrical trailer.

Our Dancing Daughters 1928 Bluray Joan Crawford

Product Description: Joan Crawford had been under contract at M-G-M for several years giving fine performances in many films without “breaking through”. When she heard about a film in the works called “The Dancing Girl”, Crawford fought for the role and won. It was her performance as “jazz baby” Diana Medford in this film that changed it all, and shot her to stardom. Ultimately titled OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS, Crawford’s energy practically bursts off the screen, as she portrays Diana as a lady who knows how to Charleston! However, the real truth is that it’s all a guise. Deep inside, Diana is virtuous and idealistic. Her baby-faced friend Ann (Anita Page) is actually amoral and selfish. She will stop at nothing to trap noble and dependable Ben Blaine (John Mack Brown) into marriage, breaking Diana’s heart. Ben eventually wises up to Ann’s true nature, as well as his own feelings for Diana. This story of “flaming youth” is a telling reflection of the time in which it was made. Accordingly, this 1928 film has been meticulously restored for this Blu-ray release, with both its image and audio (its original synchronized score of music and sound effects) meticulously restored.

Rain 1932 New On Bluray 90th Anniversary

Product Description: VCI is pleased to present RAIN, celebrating it's 90 Anniversary in a stunning new 4K restoration, produced from the original, uncut 94-minute version. It is a most important film in the history of the cinema, and one of the greatest films the 'Thirties' produced. The consummate dramatic and artistic achievement of both Miss Crawford and Walter Huston will give the picture life for many decades to come. W. Somerset Maugham's powerful story of Sadie Thompson has perhaps the most celebrated version, vividly capturing the lives of several very different human beings, thrown together on Pago Pago during a fierce monsoon. Brilliant performances are given by Crawford, as the cynical prostitute, and Huston, as the minister who tries to reform her. A 'tour de force' of camera work, style and direction of a film that caused controversy when first released, 'Rain' is one of the true classic dramas of film history.
