Caitriona Balfe Joins Live-Action TANGLED Remake As Queen Arianna

Caitriona Balfe Joins Live-Action TANGLED Remake As Queen Arianna
"Outlander" star Caitriona Balfe has joined the cast of Disney's new live-action remake "Tangled". The film is directed by Michael Gracey ("The Greatest Showman", "Better Man") from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (2025's "I Know What You Did Last Summer") and Michael Montemayor based on Disney's 2010 animated film of the same name, which in turn was loosely based on the 1812 fairy tale "Rapunzel" by the Brothers Grimm.

The story follows the magical long-haired Rapunzel, voiced by Mandy Moore in the original, who spent her entire life in a tower until runaway thief Flynn Ryder (voiced by Zachari Levi) stumbles upon her, and she sets out to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.

Balfe will star as Queen Arianna in the live-action remake, Rapunzel's long-lost mother. Disney also revealed that Elliot Cowan ("The Crown") has also joined the cast as King Frederic, alongside Patrick and Hugo McPherson ("Pear") as the Stabbington twins. The previously announced cast includes Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel and Diego Luna as a new character, Hawthorne.

Principal photography began in Alicante, Spain, Valencian Community from June 24, 2026, to June 30th, as well as the cities of Catalonia and Tarragona between July 1st and July 10th, and Girona from July 13th to August 3rd. Filming is also taking place in Burgos, Castile and León, and Álava, Basque Country.

The "Tangled" live-action remake will be released in theaters on March 31, 2028.

Balfe is also set to star in Alfonso Cuaron's Apple TV horror thriller series "Ascension", which is based on the novel "Last Days" by Adam Nevill.
