Caitriona Balfe Joins Live-Action TANGLED Remake As Queen Arianna
"Outlander" star Caitriona Balfe has joined the cast of Disney's new live-action remake "Tangled". The film is directed by Michael Gracey ("The Greatest Showman", "Better Man") from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (2025's "I Know What You Did Last Summer") and Michael Montemayor based on Disney's 2010 animated film of the same name, which in turn was loosely based on the 1812 fairy tale "Rapunzel" by the Brothers Grimm.

The story follows the magical long-haired Rapunzel, voiced by Mandy Moore in the original, who spent her entire life in a tower until runaway thief Flynn Ryder (voiced by Zachari Levi) stumbles upon her, and she sets out to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.

Balfe will star as Queen Arianna in the live-action remake, Rapunzel's long-lost mother. Disney also revealed that Elliot Cowan ("The Crown") has also joined the cast as King Frederic, alongside Patrick and Hugo McPherson ("Pear") as the Stabbington twins. The previously announced cast includes Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel and Diego Luna as a new character, Hawthorne.

Principal photography began in Alicante, Spain, Valencian Community from June 24, 2026, to June 30th, as well as the cities of Catalonia and Tarragona between July 1st and July 10th, and Girona from July 13th to August 3rd. Filming is also taking place in Burgos, Castile and León, and Álava, Basque Country.

The "Tangled" live-action remake will be released in theaters on March 31, 2028.

Balfe is also set to star in Alfonso Cuaron's Apple TV horror thriller series "Ascension", which is based on the novel "Last Days" by Adam Nevill.

Diego Luna Joins Disney Tangled Live Action Remake

"Andor" star Diego Luna has signed on to star in Disney's upcoming live-action adaptation of the studio's animated film "Tangled". The film will be directed by Michael Gracey ("The Greatest Showman") from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson ("I Know What You Did Last Summer") and Michael Montemayor ("Everyone I Love Is Dead"). Filming is set to commence in Spain this June. A release date has not yet been announced.

The cast also includes Teagan Croft ("Titans"), Milo Manheim ("Zombies") and Kathryn Hahn ("The Studio"). Luna will appear in an all-new role created for the film.

The original animated film's story is a retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairytale story of the magically long-haired Rapunzel. In the film, Rapunzel is locked up by her overly protective mother, but her wish to escape into the world outside finally comes true when she meets the good-hearted thief Flynn. Released in 2010, "Tangled" grossed over $591 million worldwide and spawned a Disney Channel series. It received an Oscar nomination for Alan Menken's song "I See the Light".

Kristin Burr will produce for Burr! Productions. Jessica Virtue, EVP of production, is overseeing the project for Disney Live Action.

Luna can next be seen in "Ashes", which he directed and co-wrote based on the acclaimed Spanish-language novel written by Brenda Navarro. It will premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Luna will also star in Netflix's "Mexico 86", and he recently wrapped production on the film "Eleven Days".

Kathryn Hahn To Play Mother Gothel In Tangled Live Action Movie

Four-time Emmy nominee Kathryn Hahn ("Agatha All Along", "The Studio") is in talks to join Disney's "Tangled" live-action version, which will be directed by Michael Gracey ("The Greatest Showman") from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson based on the studio's own 2010 animated film.

Hahn will play Mother Gothel, the original film's antagonist, known for her manipulative tendencies and obsession with youth, which she maintains through magical powers in Rapunzel's hair. It was previously reported that Scarlett Johansson was circling the role back in October, but had to exit negotiations due to her upcoming roles in "The Batman Part II" and "The Exorcist" reboot.

The cast also includes Teagan Croft ("Titans") as Rapunzel, and Milo Manheim ("Zombies" Disney Channel franchise) as Flynn Rider. Rider is the thief who helps the princess escape the tower in which she's stuck.

The original "Tangled" was released in theaters on November 24, 2010, and grossed $591.8 million worldwide. Kristin Burr will produce for Burr! Productions, with Lucy Kitada executive producing. The original received an Oscar nomination for the original song "I See the Light" by Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater.
