Weekend Box Office: SUPER MARIO GALAXY Conquers Second Frame And Crosses the $300 Million Milestone

Weekend Box Office Super Mario Galaxy Movie You Me Tuscany Faces Of Death

"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" performed extremely well in its second weekend and still dominates the box office, while "Project Hail Mary" is also holding strong in second place. Even the R-rated dark dramedy "The Drama" starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, is doing a lot better than expected. With such strong competition in the top spots, new arrivals like the romantic comedy "You, Me & Tuscany" and the horror film "Faces of Death", were left struggling and barely made a dent.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Universal and Illumination's "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" topped the charts for a second consecutive weekend, raking in $68 million, which is a solid 48.3% drop, much better than most blockbusters these days. The film has now grossed a total of $307.2 million domestically, and another $321.3 million, which brings the worldwide cume to $628.5 million, making it the highest grossing movie of the year, so far. The film cost $110 million to produce.

In second place we find "Project Hail Mary", which grossed another $24.1 million in its fourth weekend, a fantastic 23.9% decline. The film's domestic total has reached $256.2 million, while overseas it adds another $254 million for a global tally of $510.2 million against a budget of $248 million.

A24's dark romantic dramedy "The Drama" finished its second weekend in third place with $8.7 million, which is a remarkable 39.4% decline. It also added another 64 screens over the weekend, so that could have helped. Domestically, the film has grossed $30.8 million, so far, and with another $12.3 million from international screens, it has raked in a total of $43.2 million worldwide against a $28 million budget. It's officially a sleeper hit.

The newly released rom-com "You, Me & Tuscany" opened in fourth place with a modest $7.7 million from 3,151 theaters. Overseas, it only raked in $1 million. The film only cost $18 million to produce, but it looks like it won't be able to recoup its production and marketing costs. "You, Me & Tuscany" received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (66% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the audience reception was also positive ("A-" CinemaScore). But it doesn't seem likely that word-of-moth can save this one.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Pixar's "Hoppers" with $4.1 million, which is only a 28.6% drop in its sixth weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $157.1 million in North America and $197.3 million from foreign markets. That's a global total of $354.4 million against a $150 budget. Despite still going strong, it's far from the money-making machines that the Pixar classics used to be.

At #6 we find "BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’ in Goyang", which was released for only one night in 1,189 theaters and grossed $2.44 million.

Another new semi-wide release, the horror remake/reimagining "Faces of Death" also had difficulty finding its audience. The film opened in seventh place with $1.6 million from 1,189 theaters. It received a mixed-to-positive reception from critics (66% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers hated it ("C" CinemaScore).

"Exit 8", another horror film, this one based on a popular video game, received a limited release in theaters over the weekend and grossed $1.4 million from 495 theaters, which is actually a solid performance. The film also grossed $39.2 million internationally. I think this one could really use a wider release in the US.

In other news, two other films got semi-wide releases over the weekend, but failed to make the Top 10. The MMA drama "Beast" starring Daniel MacPherson and Russell Crowe made its debut with $805,993 from 1,160 theaters, while the Canadian supernatural horror film "Hunting Matthew Nichols" opened with $600,000 from 1,000 screens.
