"The Wheel of Time" series was cancelled, but it seems that this wasn't the end for this particular IP. Iwot Studios, who owns the IP, and Thomas Wu, the executive producer behind Netflix's "Arcane" and former head of Creative and IP Franchise at "League of Legends" studio Riot Games, are teaming up for new projects based on Robert Jordan's fantasy novels, which will include a new PC/mobile video game, animated feature films and a new animated television series.
No streamers or distributors are attached to these projects at this point, but the projects have been described as being "aimed at broadening the franchise's reach across platforms and engaging fans worldwide". They are being developed under a new production partnership between iwot, Vu and Anthony Borquez's media company Initiate Entertainment. Here's a look at Vu's proof of concept rendering of "Wheel of Time" character Rand al'Thor, provided by iwot Studios:
These projects have also been confirmed to be unrelated to the previously announced "Wheel of Time" projects, which include the 3D animated feature "The White Tower", which will be a prequel to the TV series, director Kari Skogland's live-action movie "Age of Legends", and open-world role-playing games currently in development at iwot Games Montréal. Iwot Studios recently announced a joint venture platform with Framestore.
Vu said the following in a statement: "I see tremendous opportunity in expanding 'The Wheel of Time' into fully authentic, integrated, interactive, and animated storytelling experiences. The depth of the mythology provides a foundation for sustained, multi-platform franchise growth".
iwot studios CEO Rick Selvage added: "Thomas has consistently demonstrated the ability to scale narrative worlds into global entertainment franchises. His background at the intersection of storytelling, technology, and franchise architecture makes him uniquely suited to help expand 'The Wheel of Time' in new immersive formats. We look forward to working closely with Thomas and Anthony as we bring the next chapter of 'The Wheel of Time' to audiences around the world".
