Oscar-nominee Kirsten Dunst ("Spider-Man", "Roofman", "Civil War") has joined the cast of Warner Bros. and Legendary's upcoming sequel "A Minecraft Movie 2". Last year, the actress joked about wanting to join the cast of the "Minecraft Movie" sequel because her kids loved the first one, but also for monetary reasons: "Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?".
Jared Hess is back in the director's chair and will also co-write the script alongside Chris Galletta. Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, including Dunst's role in the sequel. The release date has been set for July 23, 2027.
Base on the massively popular "Minecraft" video game franchise, "A Minecraft Movie" starred Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge. It was a huge hit when it was released in 2025 and grossed a total of $961.1 million worldwide.
The sequel is produced by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Momoa and the late Jill Messick. Executive producers are Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Brian Mendoza, Jon Berg and Jonathan Spaihts.
Dunst can next be seen in Ruben Östlund's "Entertainment System is Down", Alejandro Landes Echavarría's "Reptilia" opposite Mikey Madison, and "Self Help” produced by Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell.
