Weekend Box Office: HOPPERS Scores Pixar's Biggest Opening Since COCO

Weekend Box Office Hoppers The Bride

While "Scream 7" suffered a catastrophic drop in its sophomore weekend, Pixar deftly swooped in to claim the top spot with the studio's best opening for an original movie since 2017's "Coco". Meanwhile, Maggie Gyllenhaal's sophomore directorial project "The Bride!" starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale tanked.

Pixar's new animated film "Hoppers" opened in first place with $45.3 million from 4,000 theaters, the studio's best opening for an original movie since "Coco", which opened with $50.8 million in 2017. Overseas, the film raked in another $41.9 million for a worldwide total of $87.3 million. The production costs are estimated at around $150 million, which means the movie would need around $300 million to break even. "Hoppers" was well received by both critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).

After opening with $63.6 million last week, "Scream 7" dropped 73.3% and finished its second weekend in second place with only $17 million. Word-of-mouth wasn't great for this latest installment, but with $93 million domestically it will soon surpass the $108.3 million gross of "Scream VI" to become the franchise's biggest earner. Overseas it raked in another $56.1 million, which brings its global cume to $149.1 million against a production budget of $45 million.

The other new wide release, the 1930s-set Gothic horror romance "The Bride!" made its debut in third place with only $7 million from 3,304 theaters, while overseas it only raked in $6.3 million. With a worldwide debut of $13.3 million against a production budget of $85 million and another $65 million in marketing and publicity costs, the film is projected to lose approximately $90 million for Warner Bros. "The Bride!" received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (57% on Rotte Tomatoes), and was disliked by moviegoers ("C+" CinemaScore).

Sony's new animated film "GOAT" finished its fourth weekend in fourth place with $6.4 million, down 46% from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $83.6 million in North America and another $62.5 million from foreign markets. That's a global total of $146.1 million against a budget of $90 million. Still needs to cross the $200 million mark to turn a decent profit.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Wuthering Heights" with $3.7 million, a 44.5% decline in its fourth weekend. The film has now grossed $78.7 million domestically, and $134.9 million overseas. That's a worldwide tally of $213.6 million against a $80 million budget.
