Stephen Amell ("Arrow", "Suits LA") has signed on to star in the upcoming reboot of the iconic series "Baywatch", which has been picked up for the 2026-2027 broadcast season by Fox back in September 2025 with a 12-episode order. On February 18, 2026, the network held an open casting call. Production is set to begin this spring in Los Angeles.
Amell will star as Hobie Buchannon, a wild child who is now a Baywatch Captain, following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Mitch. Hobie's world is turned upside down when Charlie, the daughter he never knew, shows up on his doorstep, eager to carry on the Buchannon family legacy and become a Baywatch lifeguard alongside her dad. The character Hobie Buchannon appeared in the original "Baywatch" series across multiple seasons and was played by Brandon Call, and later by Jeremy Jackson.
"Baywatch" debuted in 1989 on NBC, where it aired for one season before moving into syndication for the next 11 seasons (250 episodes). At its peak, it was the most-watched show in the world, airing in over 200 countries. The final two seasons were renamed "Baywatch: Hawaii" as production moved to Hawaii. The franchise also included a reunion TV movie that aired on Fox in 2003, a short-lived spinoff titled "Baywatch Nights", and a feature film reboot starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario in 2017.
Showrunner Matt Nix had this to say about Amell's casting: "From the first conversation, Stephen Amell brought exactly what this new chapter of 'Baywatch' demands: heart, intensity, and that undeniable hero energy. He's the kind of lead who can sprint into danger, carry the emotional weight, and still make it feel fun. We're so excited to get started."
Nix also executive produces the reboot series alongside McG, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto and Mike Horowitz. McG will also direct the premiere episode. Fox Entertainment and Fremantle co-produce.
