Austin Butler to Star in Lance Armstrong Biopic Directed by Edward Berger
Austin Butler has signed on to star in a biopic that will focus on infamous cyclist Lance Armstrong. The film will be directed by Edward Berger ("Conclave", "All Quiet on the Western Front") from a script by Zach Baylin ("King Richard").

The film will "combine elements of 'F1 The Movie' and Martin Scorsese's 'Raging Bull' and 'Wolf of Wall Street', and will cover the life and career of Armstrong, capturing the highs and lows of his extraordinary journey". It will be produced by Scott Stuber ("Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere", "Frankenstein") and Nick Nesbitt alongside Berger. Josh Glick and Zac Frognowski will serve as executive producers alongside Baylin.

The project was involved in a frenzied bidding war among major studios. Stuber has reportedly been working for some time to get Armstrong's life rights, even before Stuber's new deal with United Artist, which explains why the project wasn't immediately nabbed by Amazon MGM Studios. This is one of a handful of films Stuber was planning to produce separately, and according to insiders, Amazon executives support Stuber's endeavour.

Lance Armstrong achieved international fame for winning the Tour de France a record seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005, but was stripped of his titles in 2012 after an investigation into doping allegations found that Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs over his career. Armstrong is banned from all sanctioned bicycling events.

Armstrong's story was first portrayed on the big screen in the 2015 film "The Program", with Ben Foster starring as Armstrong, and Chris O'Dowd playing journalist David Walsh. That film was based on Walsh's 2012 book "Seven Deadly Sins".

This is the first time Armstrong has signed off on his life rights. Stuber and Armstrong have a had relationship for some time, and the producer made it clear to Armstrong they needed to tell everything or he didn't want to do the film. After many discussions over a long period, Armstrong signed off on it. It has been reported that Baylin is also talking to people in Armstrong's life, with nothing off limits.

Stuber's upcoming projects include the Dwayne Johnson and Benny Safdie project "Lizard Music", a film adaptation of Freida McFadden's bestselling psychological thriller "The Tenant", and the "Highlander" remake starring Henry Cavill.
