Mike Flanagan to Adapt Stephen King's THE MIST For Warner Bros

Mike Flanagan to Adapt Stephen King's THE MIST For Warner Bros
Mike Flanagan's next project will be a new adaptation of Stephen King's novella "The Mist", which he's developing for Warner Bros. Flanagan will write and direct, as well as produce through Red Room alongside Tyler Thompson and Spyglass' Gary Barber and Chris Stone. Alexandra Magistro will also executive produce for Red Room.

The film will not be a remake of Frank Darabont's 2007 version of the story, so don't expect to see the same chilling ending, which was notoriosuly different from King's book. The novella originated in King's short story collection "Skeleton Crew", and it was previously adapted into a 2007 film and a 2017 TV series.

When asked on Bluesky about the project and any connections to Darabont's film, Flanagan replied: "I learned a long ago never to try to predict what the fans will or won’t argue about (everybody needs to relax, frankly; I just saw a whole chain of people foaming at the mouth over fan-made AI slop posters for The Exorcist)… but yeah, this isn’t a retread. The differences start page 1".

He also added that he loves Darabont's film and "And there’s zero point in remaking it. Which is why I'm going in a different direction. The Mist is going to be great. If there wasn't an excellent answer to 'why', I wouldn’t do it".

King’s acclaimed 1980 novella is set in a small town in Maine that finds itself covered in a thick mysterious fog filled with dangerous otherworldly creatures. A group of survivors take shelter in a local grocery store, which becomes ground zero for the best and absolute worst of humanity.

Flanagan is also working on a new adaptation of King's first published novel "Carrie", which he's adapting into a Prime Video miniseries.
