Weekend Box Office: SCREAM 7 Scores Record-Breaking Debut

Weekend Box Office Scream 7 Record Debut

Despite all the behind-the-scenes drama, the slasher horror sequel "Scream 7" scored a franchise-best debut that effortlessly dominated the box office. Without any other major new releases in theaters, the concert film "Twenty One Pilots: More Than We Ever Imagined" and the newly expanded documentary "EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert" round out the Top 5.

Paramount's "Scream 7" performed much better than expected and opened at the top of the box office with $63.6 million from 3,540 theaters, which is the franchise's biggest opening, so far, surpasing the 2022 reboot's $30 million debut and the $44.4 million opening of "Scream VI" in 2023. Overseas it raked in another $33.1 million for a global total of $96.7 million. The film cost around $45 million to produce, which it has already recouped, along with any marketing costs. The critical reception was negative (31% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers were mostly mixed on it ("B-" CinemaScore).

The animated film "GOAT" dropped to second place in its third weekend and raked in $12 million, a 28.8% decline from the previous frame. The film has now grossed a total of $73.9 million in North America and another $56.5 million from overseas markets, which brings the worldwide tally to $130.4 million against a budget of $90 million. It still needs to keep up the pace in order to turn a profit.

In third place we find "Wuthering Heights", which finished its third weekend in third place with $6.7 million, another sharp 52.1% drop from last week. The movie's domestic market is proving sluggish, with only $72 million, so far, but overseas it's doing much better, raking in a total of $119.7 million. The worldwide cume is now at $191.7 million which means the $80 million movie ended up being quite profitable.

The concert film "Twenty One Pilots: More Than We Ever Imagined" opened in fourth place with $4.3 million from 833 theaters.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Baz Luhrmann's documentary "EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert" with $3.5 million, up 9% from the previous frame. The film expanded nationwide, adding 1,638 theaters over the weekend. The domestic box office total now stands at $7.8 million. Internationally it adds another $6.7 million.

In other news, James Cameron's "Avatar: Fire and Ash" has exited the Top 10 after 11 weeks, grossing $1.3 million over the weeekend. The threequel has now topped $400 million in North America, while overseas it adds another $1 billion for a total of $1.48 billion, which is the franchise's lowest box office. It remains to be seen how this affects Cameron's plans for the series.
