New CHARLIE'S ANGELS Movie in the Works at Sony

New Charlies Angels Movie In The Works At Sony

Sony Pictures is in early development on a new big screen version of "Charlie's Angels", just in time for the iconic franchise's 50th anniversary. Screenwriter Pete Chiarelli has been tapped to pen a screenplay for the new project. Chiarelli is best known for his work on "Crazy Rich Asians", "Now You See Me 2", "The Proposal" and Sony Pictures Animation's recently released "GOAT".

The original 1976 "Charlie's Angels" series aired for five seasons consisting of 115 episodes. It followed a team of three women working at the Townsend private detective agency and starred Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith in the lead roles, and John Forsythe voicing their unseen boss, Charlie Townsend, who ran the whole operation via telephone. Cheryl Ladd joined the show in season 2.

The original show was previously adapted for the big screen with the 2000 film of the same name directed by McG and starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. The film was box office hit, grossing $264 million worldwide. It was followed by the 2003 sequel "Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.".

Recent attempts to reboot the franchise were less successful. A TV series starring Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly, Rachael Taylor was canceled after eight of its 13-episode first season ordered by ABC. In 2019, a new movie directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska was released in theaters, but flopped, earning only $73 million worldwide.
