MONSTERS INC 3 In the Works at Pixar

Pixar has announced that it is developing a third installment in the "Monsters Inc" franchise. The news came in a lengthy Wall Street Journal profile that focused on the inner workings at Pixar. It did not, however, reveal who will direct the threequel and what the plot will be about. The studio's most recent film "Hoppers" is now in theaters and it looks like it will become the biggest domestic opening weekend for a Pixar original movie in the 2020s with a 3-day total of around $40 million.

The first film, 2001's "Monsters, Inc." was directed by now-Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter and features the voices of John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Mary Gibbs. It was a massive box office hit, grossing $528.7 million worldwide. In 2013, Pixar released the prequel "Monsters University" directed by Dan Scanlon which surpassed the original with a global total of $743.5 million. A sequel series "Monsters at Work" aired for two seasons on Disney Channel.

Other future Pixar sequels are "Toy Story 5", which opens on June 19, 2026 in theaters, "The Incredibles 3", which will be released in 2028, and "Coco 2", which is expected to arrive in 2029. The studio also has some original projects in the works, including 2027's "Gatto", "Ono Ghost Market", a feature film inspired by "Asian myths about supernatural bazaars where the living and dead interact", and an untitled musical from "Turning Red" director Domee Shi.
