Weekend Box-Office: PROJECT HAIL MARY Explodes With $80.5 Million

Weekend Box Office Project Hail Mary

"Project Hail Mary" scored a big win for the sci-fi genre, effortlessly dominating the box office with a surprisingly solid debut, and demonstrating that you don't need a proven IP to get moviegoers into theaters. Another surprising debut is that of the Bollywood sequel "Dhurandhar: The Revenge", which broke the record for the biggest opening weekend of all-time for a Bollywood film in North America. Sadly, the horror sequel "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" didn't do so well.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Amazon/MGM's sci-fi adventure "Project Hail Mary" starring Ryan Gosling opened at #1 with $80.5 million from 4,007 theaters, which is the second-highest non-IP opening of the decade, behind "Oppenheimer" ($82 million). The film also surpassed the opening weekends of "The Martian" ($54.3 million) and "Interstellar" ($47.5 million). It's also a record-breaker for directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller, but for Gosling, it ranks second behind "Barbie" ($162 million). The film also raked in $60.4 million overseas, which brings its global debut to $140.9 million. "Project Hail Mary" received a very positive reception from both critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore), which will definitely help its staying power.

In second place, Pixar's "Hoppers" is doing well, grossing $17.8 million in its third weekend, which is a soft 37.9% decline from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $120.1 million domestically and another $122.2 million overseas. Its worldwide cume now stands at $242.3 million against a $150 million budget.

"Dhurandhar The Revenge" opened in third place with a record-breaking $10 million, the highest ever for a Bollywood film, not to mention it was released in only 987 theaters. Since opening on Wednesday, the film has raked in $14 million. Internationally it grossed $67 million.

"Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" made its debut in fourth place with only $9 million from 3,010 theaters. It's certainly better than the first film's $8 million debut, but not by much. Overseas it only addded another $2.8 million for a global total of $11.8 million. The film's saving grace is that it cost only $14 million to produce, double the original's $6 million budget. No doubt the marketing budget was pretty low, so it could turn a profit as soon as it crosses the $20 million mark. "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" received a mixed-to-positive reception from both critics (75% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences ("B+" CinemaScore).

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Reminders of Him" with $8 million, down 55.5% from its opening weekend. The film has grossed a total of $33.1 million in North America and $20.7 million from foreign markets. That adds up to $53.9 million worldwide against a $25 million budget.

In other news, Viva Pictures' animated feature "The Pout-Pout Fish" opened in ninth place with $1.3 million from 1,854 theaters. The film received a mixed reception from critics (69% on Rotten Tomatoes). Also, last week's #3 movie, the indie horror film "Undertone", dropped to eighth place and grossed $3 million in its sophomore weekend, which is a massive 66.8% decline.
