FIREFLY Animated Reboot Series In the Works With Original Cast

Firefly Animated Reboot Series In The Works With Original Cast

Nathan Fillion revealed at the Awesome Con that the iconic sci-fi series "Firefly" is coming back, but this time in animated form. Original cast members Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau and Adam Baldwin are all exptected to reprise their roles. The animated reboot is being developed through Fillion's production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation, which controls the underlying rights to the franchise. The project will soon be taken out to buyers.

The original show was created by Joss Whedon in 2002, but was immediately cancelled after 11 of its 14 produced episodes aired. Set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, it followed the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a Firefly-class spaceship. In 2003 it won an Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects.

"Firefly" eventually achieved cult status when it was released on DVD, and even sparked fan support groups that campaigned for its revival. Due to its growing popularity, Whedon and Universal produced a 2005 feature film sequel titled "Serenity", which grossed $40.4 million worldwide. The "Firefly" franchise also includes comics and two tabletop RPGs. And now, an animated series.

The reboot will take place between the original show and the feature film, expanding the universe while preserving continuity with the established lore. Marc Guggenheim ("DC's Legends of Tomorrow", "Arrow") and Tara Butters ("Agent Carter", "Reaper") are attached to serve as showrunners, writers and producers. A script has been completed. Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved, but Fillion has confirmed that Whedon has given the series his blessing.

Early concept art has been developed in collaboration with the Oscar and Emmy-award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine, which you can check out below:
