Oscar winner Laura Dern ("Marriage Story", "Little Women") has joined the cast of the upcoming fourth season of HBO's hit drama series "The White Lotus". The actress replaces Helena Bonham Carter, who recently exited the series shortly after filming began, but Dern will not be taking over the same role that Bonham Carter was set to play. Instead, the show's creator Mike White developed an entirely new character for her to play.
HBO confirmed Bonham Carter's departure in a statement before Dern's casting that read as follows: "It has become apparent that the character which [series creator] Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten, and will be recast in the coming weeks, HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon."
The new season's cast includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustavsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Rosie Perez, Ben Schnetzer and Laura Smet.
Here is the official synopsis for Season 4: "The fourth season will follow a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the span of a week, taking place during the Cannes Film Festival. Hotels featured include the Airelles Château de la Messardière as the White Lotus du Cap and the Hôtel Martinez as the White Lotus Cannes. In addition to Cannes, the season will film in St. Tropez, Monaco and Paris, though the story will remain set in the Côte d’Azur".
"White Lotus" creator, writer, director and executive producer Mike White previously worked with Dern on the HBO show "Enlightened", which they both co-created. They also worked together on the film "Year of the Dog", which White wrote and directed an in which Dern played a supporting role. Dern also made an uncredited voice cameo in the second season of "The White Lotus".
