"First Cow" is a drama directed by Kelly Reichardt ("Night Moves") from a script she co-wrote alongside Jonathan Raymond based on Raymond's novel "The Half Life".
Set in the 19th century, the film follows a taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaroho) who travels with fur trappers to the Oregon Territory, and finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune. Soon the two collaborate on a successful business that involves a milking cow owned by a wealthy landowner. Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Scott Shepherd, Rene Auberjonois and Alia Shawkat co-star.
"First Cow" premiered at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival and was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival. It received a limited release in U.S. theaters on March 6, 2020.
