Disney's
"The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" is a retelling of
E.T.A. Hoffmann's short story
"The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" and
Marius Petipa's
"The Nutcracker". The film is directed by
Lasse Hallstrom (
"The Cider House Rules") and
Joe Johnston (
"Jumanji") from a script by
Ashleigh Powell. Johnston was brought on board to direct a month of reshoots written by
Tom McCarthy.
Mackenzie Foy stars as Clara, a young girl who is searching for a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. In her quest she must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (
Helen Mirren), to retrieve the key and return harmony to the unstable world.
The film also stars
Morgan Freeman, Keira Knightley, Richard E. Grant, Eugenio Derbez, Matthew MacFadyen, Miranda Hart, Ellie Bamber and
Jayden Fowora-Knight.
"The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" opened in theaters on November 2, 2018 and received generally negative reviews from critics. The film is struggling at the box-office, grossing only $5.6 million on Friday and it looks like it will finish its opening weekend with a disappointing $18 million.
