Product Description: Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) — just a child when Mary Poppins first visited 17 Cherry Tree Lane — is now a grown man raising his children Annabel (Pixie Davies), John (Nathanael Saleh) and Georgie (Joel Dawson) with help from his sister Jane (Emily Mortimer). Times are tough in Depression-era London but the winds begin to change and the enigmatic governess, whose unique magical skills can turn any ordinary task into a fantastic adventure, enters the lives of the Banks family once again, having not aged a single day. Teaming up with an old friend, Jack, they take the Banks children on a series of whimsical adventures, encountering colorful characters like Mary’s eccentric Cousin Topsy (Streep), Jack’s lovable band of leeries and bank executives William Weatherall Wilkins (Colin Firth) and Mr. Dawes Jr. (Van Dyke) — bringing life, love and laughter back into the home.

box-office-aquaman-crosses-900-million-worldwide

"Aquaman" is still topping the box-office charts in its third weekend and will soon cross the coveted $1 billion milestone. But even with the DC behemoth dominating the Top 10, the psychological thriller "Escape Room" managed a very surprising performance in its opening weekend.

Not surprisingly, "Aquaman" is still the top movie at the box-office in the last weekend of 2018, while "Mary Poppins" and "Bumblebee" continue to perform well. New releases "Vice" and "Holmes and Watson" failed to make much of an impact against such tough competition.

Directed by "Chicago" and "Into the Woods" helmer Rob Marshall, the fantasy musical "Mary Poppins Returns" is a sequel to Disney's 1964 classic "Mary Poppins", based on the book series of the same name by P.L. Travers. The 54 years passed between the first film and the sequel make it one of the longest gaps in cinematic history.

The sequel is set in 1930s London, twenty-five years after the events of the original film, as magical nanny Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to help the now-grown up Banks children, Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer), navigate a difficult time in their lives. Lin-Manuel Miranda, Pixie Davies, Nathaniel Saleh, Joel Dawson, Julie Walter, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Meryl Streep and Dick Van Dyke co-star.

The film is nominated for four Golden Globe awards, including Actress - Musical/Comedy (Blunt), Actor - Musical/Comedy (Miranda), Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy, and Score. Blunt also received a Screen Actors Guild nomination, and the National Board of Review chose the film as one of the year's Top Ten films.

"Mary Poppins Returns" opened in theaters on December 19, 2018 and received mostly positive reviews from critics. The film brought in $50 million for the seven-day Christmas total.

weekend-box-office-aquaman

The start of the five-day Christmas weekend brought Warner Bros a ton of money as their latest DC Comics flick "Aquaman" crushed the competition and secured the top spot at the weekend box-office. "Mary Poppins Returns" and "Bumblebee" performed as expected, which is pretty unremarkable, so far. The romantic comedy "Second Act" found its way into the latter half of the Top 10, while the debut of Robert Zemeckis' new film "Welcome to Marwen" was a total disaster.

The Christmas offensive has begun and studios are scrambling to score big bucks as Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year, which gives Friday releases a five-day extended weekend. Which movie will be the next "The Greatest Showman" ?

Warner Bros is offering its latest DC Comics flick, James Wan's "Aquaman", which critics are saying is pretty good, though not great. The film has already scored $13.7 million from advanced previews and it might end up raking in over $120 million for the five-day timeframe.

Paramount has released its "Transformers" spinoff "Bumblebee", which has received great reviews from critics (94% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and it looks primed to revigorate the dying franchise. The film has brought in $2.85 million from previews, which could amount to a $20-30 million weekend.

Disney brings out the big guns with "Mary Poppins Returns", the perfect nostalgia vehicle, finely calibrated to suck the money right out of your wallets. Reviews have been generous, but not overly enthusiastic. As for its box-office prospects, the film opened on December 19, which gives it a really long seven-day run until Christmas, making weekend predictions trickier. Pundits expect it to gross around $30 million over the weekend and $60 million for the seven-day timeframe. However, it's fair to assume that this musical behemoth will be around for some time, and will probably be making a lot more money in the long run.

Universal's "Welcome to Marwen" starring Steve Carell is the holiday season's odd duck. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film is a biopic inspired by the award-winning 2010 documentary "Marwencol" about artist and photographer Mark Hogancamp, who built an intimate fantasy world in his backyard that helped him rebuild his life after a devastating attack wiped away all his memories. The real-life story is inspirational, no doubt about that, but Zemeckis' blend of live-action drama and CGI fantasy adventure left critics scratching their heads. Apparently the film is a disjointed mess and audiences seem to agree. The film is expected to rake in around $7 million for the five-day extended weekend. While it only cost $39 million to produce, it's still bad news for Universal.

And finally, we have the Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy "Second Act", a light flick for the holidays that relies heavily on its leading lady's charisma. As expected the film received mixed-to-negative reviews, and equal disdain from moviegoers. The weekend debut is expected to go as low as $5 million.
