"The Dark Tower" is the highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King's famous novel series of the same name. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel (writer of the Swedish thriller "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"), the film is a sequel to the events of the books, but more specifically "The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower", and designed to act as a launching pad for a film and television franchise. The TV series has already secured Glen Mazzara ("The Walking Dead") as showrunner.

Throughout the years, between 2007 and 2015 to be exact, the film has undergone several phases of pre-production with J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard attached to direct. Howard eventually stayed on as a producer.

The film tells the story of the last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), who has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey). O'Dim seeks to destroy the Dark Tower, the only thing holding the universe together, a universe that consists of many other worlds.

The cast also includes Tom Taylor, Katheryn Winnick, Abbey Lee, Claudia Kim and Fran Kranz.

"The Dark Tower" opened in theaters on August 4th, 2017. It received an overwhelmingly negative response from critics, who praised Elba and McConaughey's performances, but found the film too incomprehensible, unfaithful to the source material and poorly put together. At the box-office, the film opened with $7.7 million on Friday, and looks to finish the weekend with around $19 million, not a joyful prospect against its $60 million budget.

Abbey Lee joins Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower
The Stephen King adaptation of "The Dark Tower" is finally moving forward after years of failed attempts to bring the project in front of the cameras. Sony and Media Rights Capital are developing the film with Nikolaj Arcel ("A Royal Affair") directing and the cast already features Idris Elba as gunslinger Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as the evil Man in Black.

The most recent casting announcement arrived today. Model-turned-actress Abbey Lee ("Mad Max: Fury Road") has joined the cast as Tirana, the film's female lead. The script written by Arcel, Akiva Goldsman and Anders Thomas Jensen is based on King's "The Gunslinger", the first novel in the series.

Ron Howard will produce alongside Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins. Media Rights Capital is also developing a TV series to go along with the film franchise. Production on the movie will begin sometime this spring.

"The Dark Tower" is set to open in theaters on January 13, 2017.
