New Chappie movie clips and featurettes

Three new clips and two featurettes have been released for Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie". The film opens today in theaters. Unfortunately, this won't be Blomkamp's shot at redemption after the mixed reception of "Elysium". "Chappie" is getting some harsh reviews that accuse the film of ripping off better sci-fi films like "RoboCop" and "Short Circuit" while offering nothing worthwhile other than awesome visual effects. The film stars Sharlto Copley, Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Sigourney Weaver.

"Chappie" opens in theaters on March 6th.

chappie-trailer-poster-hugh-jackman

The first trailer and poster for the sci-fi action thriller "Chappie" have been released. Directed by Neill Blomkamp ("District 9"), the film is the story of Chappie (Sharlto Copley), the first robot ever created with the ability to think and feel for himself. Chappie's journey will be influenced by his surroundings, ultimately molding what he will become at the end of this journey. Judging from the trailer the movie won't really be just an action thriller, but also a character study much like Blomkamp's "District 9" was. The trailer contains some action but for the most part focuses on Chappie's "coming-of-age" story. The film also stars Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Sigourney Weaver.

"Chappie" opens in theaters on March 27, 2015.

Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman ("Prisoners", "The Wolverine") is getting ready to join the cast of the sci-fi film "Chappie" which is written and directed by Neill Blomkamp ("Elysium", "District 9"). The film will tell the story of "a robot imbued with artificial intelligence that is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.".

The robot will be voiced by Sharlto Copley and the gangsters will be played by Ninja and Yolandi Visser of the rap-rave band Die Antwoord. Also, Dev Patel is rumored to play a "a young man in the impoverished town".

Hugh Jackman announced that he is "doing a role in Neill’s new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg. I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year." Jackman's role is rumored to be that of a "CEO who ends up on the wrong side of the gangsters" and the character has been described as "quite resourceful".

"Chappie" is based on a 2004 short by Blomkamp called "Tetra Vaal" (watch below):

Neill Blomkamp
Writer/director Neill Blomkamp has become one of the few truly original filmmakers who can deliver smart, emotional and thrilling films. This year's "Elysium" and especially his debut feature "District 9", are proof of that. Now, even though "Elysium" is neither a box-office hit, nor a failure, Sony Pictures has decided to finance Blomkamp's third ambitious sci-fi flick, a story about "a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes." His frequent collaborator Sharlto Copley is already onboard to voice the robot and Ninja and Yolandi Visser, the members of the rap-rave group Die Antwoord, will play the two local gangsters. Here is Sony's press release which also includes the film's official synopsis:
" Sony Pictures Entertainment and MRC have agreed to co-produce and co-finance Chappie, the next film from writer-director Neill Blomkamp, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures and Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio, and MRC. The film will be marketed and distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures.

Blomkamp will direct the film from a screenplay he has written with Terri Tatchell. He will also produce the film with Simon Kinberg. Production is expected to begin this fall.

Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, as the two gangsters.

Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “We’re huge fans of Neill Blomkamp – it’s a real thrill to be continuing our relationship with such a visionary and important filmmaker. Neill has proven that he is a true original voice and we expect that Chappie will strike a chord with worldwide audiences in the same way that District 9 and Elysium have. We love the script he and Terri have written and we’re looking forward to working again with our friends at MRC.”

“Neill is an incredibly talented and bold artist and we are proud to continue to support his work. We are looking forward to partnering with the team at Sony on Chappie,” said Modi Wiczyk, co-CEO of MRC.

The announcement comes as Sony Pictures and MRC released Elysium, Blomkamp’s second feature, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, which Blomkamp wrote and directed and also produced with Bill Block and Simon Kinberg. Elysium opened at #1 in the U.S. this weekend, and was also #1 in Russia, Sweden, Taiwan and Ukraine. Sony Pictures also released Blomkamp’s first feature film,District 9, which took in over $200 million worldwide and earned four Oscar® nominations, including Best Picture.

Hannah Minghella and Rachel O’Connor will oversee Chappie for Sony Pictures; Brye Adler will oversee for Media Rights Capital."
