weekend-box-office-the-grudge-star-wars-rise-of-skywalker

"The Rise of Skywalker" still dominates the box-office, but it has been a solid first weekend of 2020 for most of the films in the Top 10 as the overall revenue is up 2% from last year. Sony's new horror film "The Grudge" exceeded expectations but still delivered a modest debut. Also, "Frozen II" is now the highest grossing animated film of all time.

new-movies-on-theaters-the-grudge-2020

Sony and Screen Gems' "The Grudge", a reboot of the 2004 remake of the 2002 Japanese classic "Ju-on", is the new year's first wide release, and while it won't be able to compete against the likes of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker", it might still scare up a decent debut.

The film has raked in a solid $1.8 million from Thursday night early previews, which could give the film a $10+ million debut from 2,642 theaters, even though the studio is only anticipating a $9 million opening weekend. What remains to be seen is if the negative critical and audience reception that "The Grudge" has been getting will damage its box-office prospects in any meaningful way.
